If money was no problem and you had to build a tool set from scratch.
What would fill it with and why?
What brands (name any) ALL is fair game?
In what order would you start.
What would be good investments for todays market or "world" of car repair?
What air tools would you invest or get (any brand)?

I have a frugal or Scrouge gene.I really like Craftsman for the value and availability.I also think Snap-on,MAC,Matco,and the like are great tools just not such a value as Craftsman.
If I were buying a piece at a time so to speak,I would start with
Screwdrivers-Craftsman basic set
Combination End wrenches
3/8 socket set w/ratchet
1/2 socket set w/ratchet
Box end wrenches
3/8 deep sockets
1/2 deep sockets
3/8 drive extensions
1/2 drive extensions
Air ratchet 3/8
die grinder
nut splitters
Channel locks
needle nose pliers.....

The best deal is to buy a starter set.Costs a bit more to start but gets you going enough to do quite a few things.I've been an Industrial Mechanic for 30+ years and had my tools stolen at one point by an unscrupuolus employer.I started over with a Craftsman set of 100 pcs. or so and built from there.
BTW that employer was a sole proprietor and has closed his business.I vowed I would get even with him(he only got me for about $200.00 worth of tools but they were the ones used most) so every time I see him in Wally world, the grocery store,a bar,or a community function I walk up and say "HI".I told him I would get even and that he would never see it coming or know when it was going to happen. He has left carts of groceries in the store, full beers on the bar, fireworks displays, and various other activities, sometimes even walking away and leaving his wife wondering until she see's me.She happens to be a very nice lady and once confided to me that I made her life easier since she could always tell him "You don't want another"_____" in your life do you?"

if money was no problem i would call my mac dealer (i like snapon tools more but my local dealer is an id10t) and pick out a box then when it comes in make him deliver it and empty half of his truck into it :) if he doesn't want to go to your house flash him 15-20g to change his mind :)

this is just my fantasy do with it what you want

Just for the heck of it, I'd load up on best of breed tools from the more obscure (at least in the US) companies...no Mac/Matco/Snap On at all, and stick it all in Lista cabinets.

WOW, i own KRL1001 as it was own by my good tech friend which work as transmission tech who are top six tech in USA. i have no problem with KRL1001. but when i bought KR1200 like 6 months ago and it have bad shocks for hold top lid up as it was happen when i bought it. my snap on said it is lifetime warranty so it replaced right after a week. then i used it since now and no problems. i was told that KRL1001 are made in 2005 but KR1200 was made 16 years ago. i am 21 years olds and working at chrysler/jeep and Mercury/Lincoln dealership as service technician.

I have question for you. how can i lube the ball bearing on my drawers of KR1200 as i just want keep it going long than fail me soon...

I would take "PanelDeland's" list and add to that...
1) a good creeper,
2) a nice aluminum jack,
and 3) and cordless inpact gun (I have the 18v Dewalt and its my favorite tool in the collection at the moment!)

I made quite a bit of money in the 20 years or so after buying the snap on 'junk' . I never had to run to sears and deal with some illegal alien tool doctor , begging for a warranty , with my snap on guy , a new replacement tool in the rare event that soething breaks is in my hand the next day or faster . oh yeah , he just bought a lamborghini , the american dream .

No more questions, Your Honor ... I rest my case. :bounce:

he also owns 4 routes north of nyc , where the techs get paid pretty good compared to other areas of the country , it is all relative

I don't know, if it were all relative the word Lamborghini would not have come up.

I would say it is easier to sell snap on where techs average a lot more money , with a much higher population than a rural route , dude has been selling snappy since 69

If it's any consolation Unkle Buck, none of my relatives have a Lamborgini either.
