I thaught this would be nice for cleaning up sanding dust in crevies of a car when doing bodywork, grinding debris, even cleaning out interiors, without the loud obnoxious noise of a shop vac. Has anyone had any first hand experience with this unit?

You sound as if it didnt really work for him. But he wasnt cleaning off dry dust and particles, right? How did it do for dry debris?

well, my tech friend used it to suck all dry dirty out of transmission case before open the transmission. he cant use it while wet dirty because it can make more mess and weight... he said it is best to do simple cleaning like you dont want have big vacuum machine that have to use big vacuum hose to do clean dirty where you do the work in vehicle..

.
I use an older style, mostly plastic but works good, lots of vac and has held up well for using it every day vacuuming out air filter boxes.

I have one plus the accessory kit. It works pretty well for me. Especially for cleaning dust and leaves from air boxes after replacing an air filter. Also works well for sucking up broken bits of glass from the inside of doors.

You need lots of air to run these things. We use them at work, but have a nearly endless supply of air.

Long as you ain't paying for the compressed air I suppose they are good, but why pay good money for what you can make in an hour from scraps?
