I don't want to go calor or propane because of the fumes, but it will be insulated, drywalled and have the ceiling covered with dry wall and insulated too. Double glazing btw.
Not sure what btu's I should be looking at.

I'm not really sure what your winter temperatures are like, or what you are trying to accomplish. Do you want toasty warm or just to take the chill out? Also, propane heaters can be vented. Then the fumes will be outside. I went with a vented propane heater. I want to be able to open the doors to move a vehicle in or out, and have the heater bring the temperature back up reasonably quickly. Electric is also the most expensive to run where I live (New York) though lately propane is no bargain either.

Not sure of the power requirements in Scotland, but unless you have 3 phase power to your residence, you will not be able to use the first heater.
The temps here go to about -10 degrees lowest here.
I just want it to be about say 15-20 degrees. Is a propane my best idea then? How do you vent the propane?

I'm using an Empire DV-55. Check out http://www.empirecomfort.com/ for more info. It vents through the wall. They show venting method pictures on that site. Your space is smaller, so you wouldn't need a unit that big. I think you need some more "local" information as to what is available to you, and what makes financial sense. This thread has certainly given me practice doing unit conversions. When I want my garage to be 20 degrees in the winter, I open the door. Oh, you meant Celsius! LOL

Note that the heater I'm talking about is permanently installed. If you're looking for more of a portable heater solution, you can pretty much ignore the stuff I said.
What about the gas and the detailing/car that will be in the garage. It is wooden would this not be hazordous if I have a naked flame ??

Naked flame? We keep our flames fully clothed, thank you. :-) It is actually quite safe, because the combustion chamber is sealed. It takes in outside air for combustion and then exhausts to outside. It does all this through that mushroom shaped thing going through the wall. The garage is heated by the garage air circulating over this hot, sealed combustion chamber through the use of a fan. There are some diagrams on that web site.
