I'm getting ready to put new brakes on the front of my Grand Prix and noticed something that I don't understand. My car uses Bendix brake pads model number MKD699. The pads have the same model number in Wearever Gold, Wearever Silver, Duralast, and Valuecraft. Does this mean the pads all come from the same factory? Or do all companies use the same model numbers for pads for specific makes of cars?

Brake pads like brake shoes use a standard part number, no matter what the manufacturer of the pad is. It is done this way so there is no confusion in the aftermarket. There are many other parts that use a standardized part number such as oil filter. Most manufacturers only change the letter prefix. There is no requirement for them to use a standardized number, but most of the major manufacturers do so.

Thanks junkman. I thought that could be it but wasn't sure. I'd hate to think I paid for Bendix and got Autozone's Valuecraft quality.

The Bendix "MK" prefix denotes semi-metallic pad material. The basic "D" part number should be the same across all manufacturers.

All bets are off if you are working with Beck-Arnley parts. Their numbering scheme defies all description. :wtf:
