HF air chucks

Hey guys, I recently got one of those 99 cent round headed air chucks at HF. You know, the plain old simple type that have been around since compressed air was invented probably; simple as can be. It dont work. It goes over the valve but doesnt push the shrieder valve in. I got another one just for the heck of it. It dont work. What gives? Can even the Chinese screw up something so simple or am I missing something?

Depends on the goal of the products, giving years of good service putting air in tires, vs, selling it for 99 cents. You bought it, so did I once, so its a great success. Its the reason I asked here about a good air chuck and plan to spend about $7 for a Milton.

Did ya try another valve stem? Some the schrader is defective or screwed down the valve can not be opened to let the air in.

I tried the .99 chuck from HF for a device I was building. Pure crap. The HF locking ones are crap too. Looking at the build methods and tolerances allowed there was low expectation by the makers of them working.

The WallyWorld chucks (actually tirecock) is better, and about $1.50.
It even comes in a convenient blisterpack.

If the tool from Harbor Flotsum doesn't work, check to see if the prisoner assembled it with the center pin backwards. That was a famous trick back in the 60s when Shraders were rebuildable.

so Im not the only one then. The shraders Im trying arent defective, they work fine with the chuck I bought off a guy at the shop I used to work at. I think its a Mac that has the double chucks on it for filling duallies. I need a regular one to fill motorcycle tires since that thing wont get in there to do it. Ill just get a good one somewhere. Still bewildered how they can screw up something so simple. Oh well they got 2 bucks outta me so they must have succeded.

Yes for 99 cents it can be screwed up. The pain of lo quality that will be remembered long after the low price was forgotten. Given most of the economic currents happening in the world the imported crap will soon cost as much or more than the products they replaced. GOOD THINKING BY THOSE CEOs. The few that did not give in may have the last laugh.

Elroy would bet that what gives is that you are trying to use the chuck with the wrong kind of insert. There are actually maybe a dozen different designs on these chucks and from what Elroy recalls HF carries both "industrial interchange" in 1/4" body as well as "General Purpose Series 10" also in the 1/4" body size.

The HF chucks for both designs appear the same from the outside but are actually built different inside. The chucks and plugs are NOT interchangeable.

What you probally picked up was a "Series 10" chuck because it looked just like your other chucks, got it home and found out it would not work on your "industrial interchange" plug.

Easy mistake. Don't blame HF. Look at the parts better next time.

very interesting Elroy. I didnt know there were different types. Ill have a look again just to satisy my curiosity. I would have thought I would need the "general purpose" one and not the industrial interchange. We'll see. thanks guys

Elroy, You lost me. WE are talking about Tire filling chucks. Are you?

Are you guys talking about the quick disconnect, or whatever that you use on your air tools?
While most are more or less standard, I've got dozens that won't work with each other. Over the years these were not always standardized.

I've got them with longer shanks, different depth grooves, etc.

I’ve paid from (adjusted to today’s dollars) 5 bucks to 25 cents apiece for them. Price and finish quality has no bearing on whether they plug into the female version if it’s a different brand, or model.

By the way, most of the non-standard I have were made in the USA, and often cost more.
While the oriental mind is inscrutable especially when it comes to tool design, this isn't an example of that.
