The smell of a new electric motor or transformer, the varnish on the windings is wonderful to me, especially when running warm. Now, the same motor or transformer when overheated or burned out is nasty.

Marvel Mystery Oil.

The heady smell of race gas burned in a high compression engine.

Bread baking.

Soldering in old electronic gear.

New wood construction, less so if there is too much OSB in the mix.

10-30-2011, 02:30 AM
I agree with Rolling Thunder - Asphalt, as it comes out the back of the paver.
Jet fuel after it has been through the turbine.

Best sound ever, to go with above, the tick tick then woof sound as the ignitor on a turbine in a Hughes 500 fires and ignites the jet fuel :bounce:

Just kidding!!!

One poster mentioned skunk. I have a buddy that says the same thing. He likes the smell of it from a distance. WTF??? A skunk stinks no matter what. Especially when you have to clean the dog and the smell is stuck in your nose hairs.

I like the smell of fresh cut grass first cutting in the Spring. Sort of smells like watermelon

The smell of opening a new can of coffee when you first pop the seal

The smell of leaves in the Fall on a sunny crisp day

The smell of a freshly painted car still in the booth

A woodworking shop full of differrent woods and sawdust

Burning rubber of tires at a dragstrip

The smell of a working garage, whether it be a business or a personal garage. They all have a distinct smell of their own. The combination of oils, rust, dust, metals all make for that smell that brings back memories.

10-30-2011, 09:33 AM

The aroma of the flowering trees at the house down the street from the church I went to as a kid is deeply imbedded in my memory. The third or last Sunday of April always exotic to me.
Whatever potpourri Mrs Semevolis used down the street, when I was a teen. I've been trying to find that stuff for years.

10-31-2011, 12:56 PM
I like the odor cut off or grinding wheels give off when being used. My dad always used to wear Old Spice, that smells good. I also like the way skunks smell. Babies always smell good, strippers ( except for the scabby, b/o stinking old hag that was at Pompei's in Hartford), old El Producto cigar boxes- they remind me of my grandfather, and of course, bacon.

10-31-2011, 01:48 PM
There's a couple listed that I like but I'll add Sprayway glass cleaner. I think my trucks windows are clean only because I really like the smell of that stuff.

Oh and machine shops. I love the combo of smells that equate to one distinct smell.

10-31-2011, 01:57 PM
My dad gave me an old wooden lined tool box that was his fathers late last week. Had some old tools of his still in it, but I opened that box and it was like I stepped back in time. I could remember as a young kid looking at the tools in that box. Saturday I removed the tools and spent some time cleaning them up, but I kept going back and just sniffing at the smell of the box.

Joe's handcleaner. Smells like those candy cigarettes you used to be able to buy.

100LL, smells like gasoline did when it had lead too.

There's some science behind people liking the natural scent of their mate. Something about complimentary immune systems.

11-02-2011, 04:53 AM
Theres nothing quite like the smell of an old valve powered electrical appliance warming up, that smell of dust cooking off glass valves. Takes me back to being a kid when we had a valve TV and an old valve Garrard record player with that warming orange glow from the cooling slots in the back.

Second best smell in the owrld (after women of course in all their states) is the smell of a proper mans shed/garage. I remember as a kid the smell of my grandads shed, a mixture of oil, wood shavings, creosote, warm wood and the odd dead pheasant hanging up to mature. My brother-in-law reckons my garage has that kind of smell, to me its a proper man smell, oil, gas, assorted solvents, paint, hand cleaner plus the odd cheeky fart all blending into one heady scent of bloke.

That almost made to spit on my keyboard. Are you talking about DEF or Folex? Only thing I liked about smelling either of those chemicals was it meant the growing season was over and the test plots were nearing an end.

But I sure wish I could smell it now. I've been out of that business for many years and miss it.

Yes I have actually smelt napalm; from under a Huges 500 used to ignite controlled burn offs in crushed and dried scrub before planting in new areas in the forestry industry.

Theres nothing quite like the smell of an old valve powered electrical appliance warming up, ...
Translation to American

Valve = Tube

Then again, I'll bet there aren't that many folks around here that used anything with a tube, except a CRT !

There is one smell I thought of immediately. I can bury my nose in it for an hour. But I can not think of a way to mention it in a thread with Gentlemen in it, so I will just leave it at that.

What he said...

11-07-2011, 08:45 PM
Everybody has mostly mentioned things that came to my mind.

Anybody remember A&P grocery stores? They had coffee grinders at each cash register. If you happened to go in there when they were grinding beans for was heaven. Or as close to heaven as an 8-year old kid could imagine.

--Fresh concrete after a brief rain shower
--Diesel smoke
--Fiberglas resin
--Bondo...actually, lots of stuff in a body shop smells good
--The smell of dust burning off the heat exchanger in the furnace the first time it lights in the fall.
--Burning leaves
--Freshly ploughed earth
--A brisket in the oven
--Pipes and cigars
--Lilac bushes
That bitter petroleum smell when you're pulling maincaps off an engine. Yep.
I love the way the "blue glue" smells... Yep.

11-07-2011, 10:13 PM
JB 80 At first, i wasn't a fan of the Kroil smell, hate PB smell. I'm warming up to Kroil, and even though I have a gallon of Kroil, I keep some JB 80 on hand just for the smell. Both work really well.

The person that likes the smell of gear oil, yeah you have a problem.

Either based Starting Fluid Spray.

11-09-2011, 05:35 PM
Had to let the gardener go as I'm currently not working. Went to fire up the lawnmower and all I had was some mystery fuel in an old can so I dumped it in. Turned out to be the last remnants of premix from the dirt bike days. I used the Castor bean oil stuff back then. It was really strong as I'm guessing it seperated and a lot of the gas had evaporated. Smelled great and reminded me of some good times.

11-09-2011, 05:43 PM

Surprised fresh mown alfalfa isn't more popular, if I'm not in a hurry I'll pull over to get a better whiff. Haying is the only part of farming I miss.

And ozone from arcing electronics. I should hate that smell since it's usually expensive, but for some reason I love it.

03-07-2013, 09:06 PM
The area I live in produces a large chunk(most? Not sure) of the worlds hops. You can smell them for miles and miles in the late summer/fall.
Smells good.

I used to ride through that area in the late summer/fall on motorcycle trips, and loved that smell!

I also love the smell of fear.

And fresh baked oatmeal cookies.

I am dating myself for sure but,

Mimeograph copies, teachers would pass out problems/test and many kids would hold it up to there nose to catch a whiff. Then you looked around because many students were doing it and you laughed at the shared experience . Actually I think it was even a scene in "Fast Times at Ridgement High" though my experience predated that.

Freshly mowed grass in the spring when the school windows were open and you were cooped up in class yet. But you knew spring was here and baseball was in full swing. Of course most schools probably have air conditioning these days because of Billy and Susie's acute allergies - lol
