I'm leaning towards the Snap On, just because I know its an all USA made tool (Not just "assembled in USA" like a lot of IR guns), and I get good support from my snap on guy. It is rated for a bit more torque as well. I have plenty of air supply (about 24cfm @90psi)

I got a nice X-mas bonus, so I figured nows the time to do it. I just have a 3/8 butterfly, a standard 3/8 impact would be very useful.

Opinions?

A 3/8 impact and die grinder are my next purchases so will be watching this thread close as I was leaning towards the MG31 too

I have both and prefer the IR2115TI. It just feels better in my hand, I like the controls better, is a little lighter, and more compact than the MG31.
The MG31 seems a little faster and may have more torque but, it's also newer than my 2115TI. Both are excellent choices. You really need to use both to figure out which one feels better and you like more. Price wise, you can probably find the IR gun alot cheaper than the MG31 if you shop around. The MG31 seems to have better trigger control but, you have to get past that red paint. Either one will provide you years of hard work and quickly become the impact you reach for first 90% of the time.

I would stay away from IR for the die grinder. I have a 3102, and its ok, but My MAC 90 degree die grinder has a lot more torque, a lot more air efficient, and is "assembled in the USA" which is better than the IR's Made In China. I also have a snap on staight die grinder, and it is very lightweight, fits your hand really well, and has a lot of torque.

Thanks for the detailed response. I thing my SNap On guy will give me the MG31 for around $300, so thats about $20 higher than what I see the 2115TO going for at most discount online tool shops.

I'm going to call around and see if I can find a 2115TI to check out in person. I cant think of anyone off hand that stocks them.

I like the red paint for the fact that at a glance u will see it. The MG is magnisium, the IR is composite. I have seen with the bigger 1/2 IR's the 4 scews back off in time, mabe cause of abuse and droping it. I personaly like stated above would test drive to see what feels good. I have lost fate in S/O air tools after my IM6500 took a dive, but the MG stuff looks much more durable.

If your cool with your S/O dealer he'll let you try a demo for a week.

I bought used MG31 like 4 or 5 months ago for 75 dollars. i am still use it to remove crankshaft pulley bolt as it take 2 or 3 seconds to impact the bolt out... powerful!! i has IM31 and it is best for simple works where torque is low like 100 ft lbs or something which i can make control air flow on trigger.. My good tech friend (which are Master Tech for Chrysler as best technician and many people prefer him to work on their vehicles) own MG31 but when i gave him my IM31 and he had hard time on it then i gave him my MG31 and he love it and job done in few minutes... he are supposed to bring his BIGGER toolboxes but he can't bring because three of four casters are broke while loading on trailer.. so i let him to use my tools for while. i had no problem with that because he always wrap off the dirty and put in where it was before. he are respect me as use my tools and i am very respect him to help and teach me on Chrysler vehicles in my dealership...

What material would you expect to last longer?

i am prefer magnisium as it is little hard case than plastic case that what IR use... i had IR2135ti and it is very powerful and lighter but i am afraid to drop it because it will crack or even broke it...

I would say magnesium would out perform composite in the long run...
But don't quot me on that

I am planing to get a IM31P, i prefer the pinned anvil. So i can slap a small impact extension on it and not have to deal with the clip wearing out, and having to change the snap ring (I run my 1/2" nitrocat with a small MAC impact extension with a ball retention for this reason, i hate when the socket starts to fall off). One thing good about S/O is they stock parts even for their older guns and exploded view on their website if you ever lose the book that comes with it . But im sure IR parts are also available but donno how many hoops you have to jump through to get em.

I picked up the MG31 today. I used it on a few things, and its got plenty of torque. I am very happy with it.

I have an IR 2115TI and I'd say it's ok. It's not a powerfull as I thought it would be. For anything that's pretty tight or large it's useless. I think it's overated by the manufacturer as far as torque and the like. I too have plenty of pressure and cfms.

I usually have to get out the 1/2" drive Snap on IM 6500HP and it does the job nearly every time.

I have the snap on unit and like it alot. I also have the snap on impacting ratchet which works very well.
