Since my craftsman combo is starting to overflow, I was thinking about getting a second top box and just having it on the workbench - something like this one: http://stlouis.craigslist.org/tls/537751373.html
However, this is plenty close enough to pick up:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180211415004&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=008
It's about twice as big as my current one, big enough I could just replace it.
I'm thinking 'round $500. Sound about right?

I'd go for the Mac box on craigslist over the craftsman one on ebay. My reasoning is that the ebay seller used "snap on" in his title, and that pisses me off.
Have you considered buying new?

The box does say Snapon on the side :bitchslap
I would go with the Mac box.

I have no problem with buying new. I'm just on a bit of a budget - 500ish - and figured I could get the most bang for my buck buying used.
I currently have a Craftsman 26" top box and roll-around. I either need to replace it completely with a 40" setup (probably out of budget new), or get an additional 40" top box.
Needs to be well-built and US-made. Are the Kobalt boxes US?

I would go with neither.
The Mac box is their economizer model. Which is their lower end box made by Beach in Canada and they're overpriced. You would also know it as the Husky or Blackhawk box here in black.
The Craftsman set up appears to be an older model with shallow top drawers. I like deep top drawers for sockets. I also don't think it has roller bearing drawers.
These are just my opinions. These boxes could serve you well. I prefer roller bearing slides and different drwaer configurations.
Keep on shopping,

I'm not really sure. I've played/examined one in-store for about 15 minutes and determined it to be excellent quality. I think that they're built a bit better than Craftsman and throw in a few nice features. For its size, it would be hard to beat.
It is well built but maybe not US made. Is Craftsman's Waterloo boxes still US made? They might suffer from the "from global components" clause.

I vote for the Craftsman box. I have that identical set and I have had it since the early 1990's. Mine is a friction slide setup and it is heavily loaded, it has been a fantastic box and I have no plans of replacing it, or upgrading it. BTW, when that box was new the top box was $299 on sale and the roll cab under it cost $399 on sale. My how things have changed!

You are correct, that model was offered just before Sears began offering them with BB slides roughly 1990-1992 or therabouts. As to the thoughts on sockets I too like my sockets kept in the top box. My top is all 1/2" standard, 4 drawers down from the top on the wide side drawers is all my 1/4" standard the bottom is all 3/8" standard sockets and yes I stand them on end and do not lay them on their sides. I do think $400 should be the most regarding the value though. I have that exact box and have never regretted buying it.

You are better off buying a new Craftsman on sale. You can swap drawers on the BB 40" wide box to get 2 - 2" drawers instead of the 5" bottom drawer that is standard. The other option would be to get some metal cabinets with shelves. I have a set that are 38"w x 24"t x 24"d that cost me an hours worth of helping a packrat empty out a bus full of parts and equipment.

Thanks guys. I'll take a look at the Kobalt boxes at Lowes, and otherwise keep an eye out for a Craftsman sale - That Ebay box is already well over $400.

Went and bought a 36" masterforce top and bottom box a Menards. Not snapon but a better value for my budget.

Really?! Are you sure? I didn't think Beach was still around...
