I think i'm going to just buy one on credit and pay it off in time. I should have budgeted for a tool box :(

Hey before you go and buy that... look on ebay. You can get craftsman ball bearings on thier used, but really cheap, and sometiems they throw in tools. Just another option, that might be a cheaper way to go for ya.

Jim

Or you can do what I do and stuff 10 lbs of shat in a 2lb bag... ie my tool box lol

you can find deals like this.. This one is pickup only though, so I wouldnt bid, but thats an awesome price for that. The BB stuff is pretty good quality. Thats a steal.

That isnt a bargain seeing its at $200 and the reserve hasnt been met....that would be a good price if there wasnt a reserve

I have the Costco version and think they are head and shoulders above the Craftsman BB units (not Pro units). Smoother drawers, non-annoying latches, drawer liners included.

Yea I think the Costco and Sams are the same and I agree they are really good quality.....this the thing I am asking for christmas

I have the Sam's Club one & have just one small complaint. The hinged lid has no handle on the front when facing it to lift it open. If your hands are a little greasy, you need both hands to lift it from the sides by applying pressure inward. It's not the end of the world & may sound trivial, but it's annoying when your hands are full & you're busy. Other than that, it's one of the best purchases I ever made & would highly recommend it.

I'll drill a couple of holes in the face of the lid & add a handle one day, it's a simple fix.

I got the 41" version at Sams, love it, only complaint is that the drawers want to slide closed on their own accord, like they were made with a slight slope. My friend was amazed when he saw a loaded drawer that kept closing on its own. There are times I want it to stay open for a bit, I put something taller than the drawer in it.

To me that shows its a good quality that it can hold large loads and still close easily

Yeah, its one of the better asian imports, but my complaint with those is the lack of draws... they put in a few deep draws instead of numerous shallow draws... any more than 2 or 3 deep draws in a combo unit liek that is a waste of space

I actually like it... I'd like to keep some of my electrical tools like the skillsaw, 7" hand grinder, etc. in there. Plus i got a ton of air tools. And not that many hand tools other than sockets and wrenches.

The only weird thing is that i have NEVER seen a mechanic with one of these boxes. And i know ALOT of mechanics around here. So i was thinking maybe they are bad quality?

I think not alot of people know about them is the thing.....I would just it for my mechanic style tools...seeing that is about the only thing I have....and a butt load of power tool accessories with no power tools

kartracer55

Well Like i said, there isnt alot of draw surface on those boxes... most mechanics will always have a full width deep top draw for storing thier sockets and stuff, but other than that, many short draws for screwdrivers, pliers, ratchets, wrenchs... and then maybe another deep on on thebottom for air tools. Its just more efficient to have many shallow draws for organizational purposes

Yeah, The fact that they arnt made here is the reason I havent bought the combo yet, and man, I really need a new box. I was talking to my dad about doing a Setup like Wolverine used, so Im sure I could transfer some of my tools into those boxes... and eliminate my problem.

I know that you're joking, but I would like to point out that these boxes use a nice low guage steel.. even if they were painted they would still be a good deal... the only downside i can think of is maybe poor spot welding?

kartracer55
09-27-2005, 09:51 PM
Well If I were you, Id figure out the heaviest load you will have in one of your draws, then pick up a few items at costco or sams club or whever and stuff them in the draw and see how it perates under this full load.

The one downside of the SS is that it's not magnetic. So those of us that stick our shop lights or other magnetic stuff to the boxes are SOL.

That shouldnt be a problem you should have plenty of things made out of medal in your garage to hold those things

I looked it over in the store quite well before I bought it, & tried very hard to find something to hate about it. I didn't buy it the first time, & I researched a little on line to see who manufactured it. (Never found out for sure) I posted on a few forums, including here, asking about it. After several people said they, or a friend had one & liked it, I went back & bought it. The only negative comments I heard were that it was made overseas & not here. I've got a few of the drawers completely loaded, one with socket sets & one with wrenches, & there is no problem at all with the tracks binding, shifting out of square, or moving on their own. We'll see how it holds up over the years like the small Craftsman I have for 20 plus years.

Mine seemed to have a numebr of shallow drawers. The manual that came with it was from CPS Metal, it is this cabinet: (I'm sure you've seen it in the other Sams threads)

http://www.cspsmetal.com/index.cfm?pg=products_details&fldr=products&cid=2&pid=40&show=true#

I now keep all of my 'dirty' tools like woodworking and bodywork stuff in my old Craftsman Homeowner rollaround base, keep my good tools in the Sams box.

$649 for the Costco version, Sams is about the same. All maded by CSPS: http://www.cspsmetal.com

Costco 41"

Sams 41"

http://www.cspsmetal.com/products/images/Sam4114da_new.jpg

I think Sams also sells the 31" at certain stores IIRC

Did anyone know that these guys also make small portable tool boxes? Some costco stores in my area had them and sold out in a week.

I would go with the sams because of the additional draws. The costo one has that rediculously HUGE draw on the top chest, and thats a complete waste of space.

I like how the sams top chest has the three seperate draws. I say go for the Sams clubversion if its between the two.

All of the Sam's in Dallas/Ft. Worth only carry the 31" version now. They dropped the 41" version, I don't know where you could get it today. The 31" version looks like they just removed one of the three drawers on the top, and cut off everything under it. It is flat faced and not sloped like the 31" pic posted above.

Even the 31 inch model will hold a pretty decent amount of tools, it just might be a little crowded. Worst comes to worse you cold save up and get two, or buy a second one a little laster, and simple bolt them together and you will have plenty of storage

Not that many more draws... Besides, its shat load of wasted space in that costco one. I couldnt think of anything id put in that HUGE draw on the costco top chest.

Thin draws a re much better... They allow you to be more organized. Go with me on this one :bounce:

I believe TSC stores carry thier stuff, as well as Thetoolwarehouse. Not stainless, but its still a pretty good value.

You can always put some cool decals on the stainless box so it wont be quite as loud.

I really like how Mac's Macsimiser(SP?) stainless (i think its stainless) box is engine turned. I think that is cool as hell. I think it gives it a lot more style than just a plain stainless, no color, no character, box.

You can do that with a wire brush. I for got the name for the process though. I do it on small pieces sometimes using a hand drill. I dont think Id be confindent doing a toolbox though.

All you need is a STIFF wire cup brush, which you can get at many hardware stores. I havent tried the knotted brushes, but they might even work better.
