I just bought a tool chest to add to my collection and was super happy with my purchase till I got home. The lid on the brand new chest is off center by about 1/8th inch on each side. I brushed it off and settled my tools in and drilled two holes for a security cable.

I know I got a deal for the chest from sears for $230 but darn if that lid isn't bugging the heck out of me. Should I let it go or try to take it back? Is this common with sears?

Heres some photos, I don't think they do it justice. The left side is inset and the right side is an over hang of at least 1/8th inch. You can see on the inside the lid hinge is of center also.

Yes mine is exactly the same way on my Craftsmen....slightly off....which means most likely yours wont lock either because the latch will push the lid up

mine lines up and locks fine, is the piano hinge twisted at all? can you tweak it back into shape?

Yup, doesn't lock smoothly but mine does lock. Really nice setup for the price but I wish they would get things like the lid spot on.

From my measurements I think they welded the hinge on crooked.

If you've drilled holes in it, you're going to have to live with it. They're not going to do anthing for you now.

Why don't ya just tweek it over. Mine was like that, I just grabbed the top and twisted it a little to make it line up better.

Hey cybin, I had the same thing happen years ago on a Craftsman box. Not sure if yours is similar, mine had a full length piano hinge that was riveted to the lid and I drilled out the rivets and moved the lid over a bit and reinstalled the rivets and it was as good as new.
