Well, here is a sneak peak. I have to do some cleanup on the outside, but its better than I had expected. It turns out that its a green painted box, and most were black, making this one of the earliest dealer boxes known.
This box is the remains of a failed attempt by Snap-on to sell tools at hardware stores, and this is the box the store would have dealt the tools from.
And Merkava asked about the wood added in the ebay auction. When I removed it, it revealed the original insert card listing the tool numbers and prices!
I put some tools in it for now, I have a few hooks that need to be repaired.

That is SWEET! You should contact Snap-On headquarters with your bourgeoning Snap-On vintage museum! They would probably put you in their "Tech" magazine! http://www.snapon.com/techmagazine/

It is restorable, there is enough paint in many areas of the back to get my paint jobber to match it, however, on the outside of the box, all of the graphics would be extremely hard to safely mask for a repaint, and there would be way to remove the rust from the outside without removing the printed areas.

Leave it alone!!! The old worn look is way cool, IMHO.

Ya know, I think he might be right! :wtf:
NOW THAT YOU POSTED THOSE PICTURES, I KNOW HE IS RIGHT! Although, a really good graphic artist could duplicate those images exactly based on nothing more than the existing images!

My use of the word "restorable" meant "can it actually be buffed out?"
I understand the issues with the original graphics. Better to leave it be, IMHO.

Definately wont buff out.
I have been cleaning the front doors with GIBBS brand oil for the past few minutes, and its really taking off a lot of dirt, and the contrast of the decals is really coming out. The "rust" is turning more into a "patina" look. GIBBS is awesome stuff, I use it to clean up all of my vintage tools. Its like magic.

What I would suggest is a semi flat clear over is all to preserve the decals and remaining paint.

I would use some sort of enamel if that is the route you take, A stronger paint my react to the decals and or old paint.

Im concidering using clear POR-15, which should stop rust better than clear coat. GIBBS oil is also paintable. it ewont affect paint sticking later on, just go over with wax and grease remover.

Looks nice...
Ever watched "Antiques Roadshow"? Seems that for most collectables, anything other than a good cleaning is the worst you can do to preserve value... much less enhance it.
Clean it (gently) and let it be.
Things are original only once.

Couldn't agree more. If I were a collector I would prefer it be 100% original. As long as it isn't too humid, it shouldn't deteriorate.

I have decided to keep it all original. I have used GIBBs oil to clean off dirt buildup, and provide a light protective oil coating, and thats all I am doing.
