I wonder if it was used in the military; thus the gray (navy or air force) color and red interior?

The red is original and the out side is a repaint, I think??

Here is the scoop.
The top box is desirable, but not at that price. There was a bottom box that matched the top box, but the one in this auction is not it. The bottom box is worth maybe $150-200 tops to the right person who wants it for use use, it has little collector value.
The top box is the first large format snap on box, and is from the mid 40's. During the 40's, and up until this box, all snap boxes were grey. This box was offered in grey and red, and was the first red snap on tool box offered.
This one was obviousely a red one originally (as stated above), and re-painted later. They grey ones are rarer, but the red ones are generally more appealing to a collector. A grey top box sold for $1275 a few weeks ago.
Interestingly, a red one, that was very poorly listed was offered for $99 no reserve about 3 weeks ago, with pickup only (I think in oregon), and dint sell. it was re-listed (I cought it on the re-list), and after a day, the auction was removed, so someone made a private offer I guess. I was going to bid the $100, and hope for the best, and have a shipping company pick it up for me.
At $4500 opening bid, this box will not sell. A buy it now of around $1200-1500 would be in the ballpark, MAYBE, but I certainly wouldnt pay that for a 1940's box. If it was $200-300, Id buy it. I dont collect 40's tool boxes, but this one is quite nice looking.

Cool box, uncool price, I question the mental stability of the soul that pays such a price for this old box!

That top box would look killer in my garage, for around $200.00 though!!

Absolutely. Even if I had the money I wouldnt pay that much. I just think its an awsome box. I dont mind that they are not matched as long as they are both old.

That is a pretty cool set and a nice collectors piece to talk about, but you would just have freakin lost your marbles to pay that kind of price!!

I don't think I would hold my breath waiting for a buyer on that one, I would say that price is a lofty goal indeed!

If it was the first box from around 1923, it wouldnt go for that much money, even with all of the tools in it.

That's good to know because I was thinking the two don't match each other very well. I'd be curious to know what the correct bottom box looks like though.

This is interesting. Another one with the wrong bottom box. I guess its not really wrong, but not the intended bottom box. The seller is selling just the top box, but for pickup only, the bottom box can be had for the same price as the winning bid as the top box. Yeah, right!

What vintage is the bottom box? I have the same one...I know my dad bought it when he was a young kid at an auction sometime in the mid-'60s. I have my machinist's tools in it right now. It's in the same shape as the one in chad s's link...
What is one of these bottom boxes realistically worth? Mine is not for sale, but it would be nice to know for insurance purposes...

I'll see what catalogs it shows up in when I get home tonight, but the bottom box is 1940's.
As for value, in perfect shape, it could maybe bring $400, but average shape would be $150-300.
The top box is hard to find, and commands such a high price due to its art deco design, and rarity. The bottom boxes from this era (other than the one thats made to fit under the K-60) are not desirable to mose collectors, other than for tool storage.

Hmmm...sounds like Dad should have taken our Snap-On guy up on his offer to trade a new KRL series roll away for it. :bounce:
Thanks Chad!

You know whats funny, this post reminds me of this old thread:

The funny thing is, the bottom box in that humerous thread is actually the K-200, which is the correct bottom box for the K-60!

Notice the tiny castors on that rollcab in the old thread! :wtf:

That old thread is pretty comical...I hadn't seen it yet.
Our old Snap-On guy did actually make that offer, but that was probably 15 or so years ago. I couldn't tell you if he is still in the biz or not, but he was the same guy that warranties were a PITA with because he bought all sorts of broken stuff at flea markets to exchange on new and the company had pretty much cut him off.
I can assure you my old box definitely wasn't headed for a museum in Kenosha!

I did see that, but I think it was a K200. Im sure over the course of 60-65 years, they could have been changed.

The K-200 should be 32" wide, and 30" tall (not sure if that counts the casters or not).

This bottom box shows up in my 1946 catalog as the K-300 "Rolla-Bench", however it is missing the bottom 2 drawers.
It then shows up again in my 1953 catalog as the KR-300B, and an optional KR-431 bottom drawer drawer set would fill in the bottom 3 drawers.

I saw the add today for the red box, with the $1,400 starting bid. I like that he's selling the top box only in this auction, but will sell the bottom box to the winner for the same price!
I picked up that top box and it's matching bottom box a few years ago for $300. It's in rough shape, but fixable. The guy I bought it from said his dad bought them new in December of '39.
