View Full Version : Really long handled ratchet?

I'd kind of like to have a BIG long handled ratchet for those times when something ratcheting is a lot nicer than using a breaker bar. Only job that immediately comes to mind is turning over the motor during timing belt changes when its handy to slowly turn it from the crank, so I don't want to spend unnecessarily. Less than 24" inch need not apply. 1/2" or 3/4" fine.
What I've been doing so far is just keeping my eye out at the swap meet. Any ideas?

2 foot long ratchets are fairly expensive. Mac, Matco and Snap on all make them but they're around the $150 mark.
EZ red makes a telescoping 3/4 drive ratchet (EZRMR34) that extends from 24-39.75 inches. It runs $91.50 from the toolwarehouse.
Titan also makes a 24 inch 1/2 inch drive ratcheting breaker bar (TTN12024)also available from the toolwarehouse.net for $39.95.
Genius tools also makes a 24 inch 1/2 inch drive flex head ratchet that can be found on Ebay often for less than $30.
Most brands offer 1/2 drive ratchets in the 17 to 18 inch length. I'm not sure if the extra 6 or 7 inches that a 24 inch ratchet offers is worth the money or affords that much more leverage.

Snap-on make a flex-head 1/2" that's a little over 25" long. i have a Snap-on SL936 which i use a lot. it's very good.
other than that, stick a cheater pipe on a standard 1/2".

if you need a lot of leverage to turn an engine over, take the plugs out.
when i do timing belts at work i use a standard 3/8" ratchet. that's with the plugs in.

Longer handle, less force, more control, gets my hands out of the busy part of the engine bay, etc. etc. for a fairly single use tool why not get what works best?
I'm not going to spend a lot on it, maybe $25 tops, so really the bigger the better.

The only things I can think of that would come close to the value of Snap-on tools would be gold, diamonds and prime real-estate; everything else is a poor investment.

The real joke would be to find some really nice 3/4 or 1" drive ratchet cheap, then spend a bundle for a couple sockets to use with it.
Six months ago when I wasn't thinking about buying one I know I saw a few at the swap meet and nobody wanted to buy them.

at ~$1.04 per inch, you're not going to get much of a ratchet.

This is true. who says money can't buy happiness? it can buy you Snap-on and that's pretty much the same thing!

True. Good luck in your quest. It sounds like you already know what you need to get... now go get it!

You're comparing SO valuation to diamonds? Let's not even talk about how many SO ratchets you can get for a diamond. It's waaaaay more than the number of Cman ratchets you can get for a SO one.
Plus many people pay too much for diamonds since they don't know how to shop. In addition, many diamonds sold at mall-type shops are lower quality AND overpriced. Can you get low quality SOs? Nope!
I think it may be fairer to compare SO valuations to that of printer ink.
As for 24" ratchets, I don't think a 3/4" drive can be had for cheap, definitely not for $25. *maybe* a 1/2" one if you're lucky.
I know that 15" ones from Armstrong can be had for $50 new, though. There are also 24" no-name breaker bars for less than $20.

People who work on trucks or heavy equipment are about the only ones that need a BIG ratchet, and if they do the work they have one and don't need another, so while big ratchets are rare to find, a person willing to pay more than $20 for it is more rare.

I just use a cheater pipe on a C-man ratchet - the warranty covers it.
I once had to use a five foot cheater pipe with most of the air out of the tires and my wife mashing the brake pedal to remove lug nuts from the car I bought to race. (Honestly, I was hoping that the studs broke to have an excuse for SWMBO as to why I need aluminum hubs...) After 14 nuts, the ratchet had a slight bend. After 18 nuts, it started to slip. Thank God it lasted to nut 20, because as soon as it broke loose the handle cracked and the ratchet would no longer ratchet. I went to Sears the next morning and had a replacement.
And before you ask, yes, I had used penetrating oil - I would think after two weeks of spraying every morning and every evening they would've come free much easier.
So, in short, if you need more torque, get a bigger pipe... especially if you're not going to use the tool very often.

I also have an so 18 inch breaker bar and the ratchet adapter to go with it and if I need more the milwaukee v28 impact or long pipe for the breaker bar and last resort, I have a snap on TQFR250E which is close to 23 inches to tighten only, hahaha. Just use a proto 5449 and a pipe, which I have done and never broke them, you can get long protos pretty cheap on ebay!!!!

4 or 5 years ago, I got a KD 3/4" drive ratchet, never used, for exactly $20. A buddy of mine decided to go to diesel mechanic school, bought a bunch of new tools, went to school for two weeks and quit. Sold his tools for almost nothing. The internals of the KD and C-man 3/4 are the same.

Where did you find the SLF80? It's not on Snap On's website ... only on the industrial site ... and how much did you pay for it?
Being a big fan of buying truck tools used....
Did some searches on craigslist for 3/4 drive stuff and this looks like a pretty good deal after you sell off the sockets and misc stuff... you'd probably be in the ratchet and breaker bar for $75 or less :)

No affiliation with seller.
FYI - I was able to score my 3/4 SO ratchet and handle used for $80 about two years ago
