Sorry but the only thing I have figured out for posting pics so far is to provide a link to photpbucket that has all my pics, I have not figured out how to display them directly so this is as good as it gets till I figure out more.

go to the picture on photobucket and jsut left click where it says "direct link" that will copy it. Then go do the mountain icon on top of the post here, click that , and paste it in.

*Looks through for pics of daughter.*:lol_hitti

Nissan_Crawler, is that your box at home or at work?

Very nice stuff indeed!!! I noticed that you have a bunch of different brands represented. I like seeing a box full of shiny SO or Facom stuff as much as the next guy, but I think your tools more closely represent what most of us have at home (minus the Snappy stuff for me :( )

BTW, have you put any muscle behind those HF swivel head ratchets? How did they hold up if you did? I have the 1/4" but was afraid to go any larger.

Does she still have the Lancer? ... and you put flames on it?????

The Lancer is currently in my driveway. She prefers the '67 Mustang, and it is cheaper to own right now for her. (No full-coverage insurance)

Since my truck is off the road due to smog issues, my wife is driving the Lancer and I get her Caravan. The flames were already on the Lancer when it came back from Alabama.

After the wedding stuff, I hope to fix the truck, get out of the minivan, and re-establish my manhood.

But enough about me, this is Uncle Buck's thread.

From the looks of your tools; you've been at this awhile! Your stuff is definitely a working mans collection of tools; this is not for show but for using! Welder, torch, body hammers, drill press, lathe etc, etc. you must have the skills to go along with it! A couple of dead giveaways that you actually "fix things"; a timing belt hanging from the top box; torn down motor near another box.... I could go on and on! The tools would indicate that you get allot of your stuff used; which is what my collection looks like! It also looks like you have some of the "overflow" problems I have; sometimes too many tools in the drawers to the point that you can't quite organize everything like you would like to! A puller "cabinet" in your home shop; how cool! Nice stuff, good collection and it looks like you pretty much have everything to tackle anything someone might throw at you! I did notice that you don't seem to have much air tools (I saw one impact); do you have a compressor to support a air tool collection? Were you a body man in a former life? Now that I am done looking at all your pics; I think I might have just smelled a whiff of your shop, ahh... grease, lawnmower, slight smell of gasoline, grass clippings.... :)

Wil, it is an old Dayton friction slide box I picked up used years ago. I would like to repaint it if I ever get the time but who knows. I only put specialty type tools in that box, brake tools and the like.

Afew socket trays I got in pawn shops and the like, all the gray ones used to be sold through Sears. I bought the gray ones in the mid 1990's when they were sold as a group for only a few bucks or so.

I get most of my stuff used as you guessed. I need more space and really cannot afford to move, or add on, so as you said overflowing can at times be an issue. The puller cabinet was salvaged as a cast off box from an old ambulance (an example of recycling, every wall cabinet you see was destined for the dump) I should have uncovered the bottom drawer where you saw the cheap impact, I have a very good selection of air tools, but need to run 220 from the house and get the garage wired for my new 60 gallon Puma compressor that I snapped a shot of but may not have gotten posted. It has never run a stroke! I am a very poor electrician! My body and fender/paint skills are primarily self taught though I have done a lot of reading and have had several night classes at the local vo-tech. I have a number of hammers, dollies, spoons, files, spray guns and the like and have used much of it on and off through the years, though not much in the last few years due to my compressor issue described above. The old WH tractor is a 1963 that I am still tinkering with, once I get everything mechanically nailed down I will need to go back and finish with stickers and other detalis. The sole purpose for the tractor and wagon is to give my kids and the local neighborhood kids rides around the neighborhood.

The old red beat SO friction slide box with the Edelbrock sticker on it sets on the left side of the bench in my shop right next to the drill bit cabinets and it holds nothing but metric tools only, no SAE to be found there. For those interested in making a poor mans 1/2" drive shorty ratchet note the old Cman ratchet just peeking out of the top of the metric box, all I did was saw off the rest of the handle and grind it smooth. I took no pics of the contents of the old brown Kennedy but it is full of bigger bits, step bits, and silver and demming bits I use in the lathe. I noticed I failed to get a few pis of my metal shapers, power hack saw, compressor and a few other odds and ends in there too so I will snap a few more and get with wrenchr and see if I can properly post them tonight.

I think it's a Gearwrench model. The Gearwrench set can be found at Sears and many online vendors for around $25. Home Depot here sells a Husky model without the red box and extra bits and sockets for $15. What's great about it is that it's fine tooth unlike other bit drivers. The offset angle is nice too. Great for trim work.

No disrespect to others, but its nice to see pictures from members who actually make use of their garage and tools which is quite apparent from your photos.

Both tap/die sets came from Sears.

UB,

That's a shop I could see gettin' real comfortable in, downin' a few brews while shootin' BS. Someday, if I can shake this desire to uproot and move every few or so years, I hope to settle into one myself. Roll cabs in the hallway, closets overflowing with tool cases and supplies, working on projects outside (or in the living room) is really getting old....

Uncle Buck

I think it's a Gearwrench model. The Gearwrench set can be found at Sears and many online vendors for around $25. Home Depot here sells a Husky model without the red box and extra bits and sockets for $15. What's great about it is that it's fine tooth unlike other bit drivers. The offset angle is nice too. Great for trim work.

I bought it at Sears during the $5.00 coupon sale for about20-25 bucks and I love it.

I checked out the age of the torque wrench you were curious about tonight. When I looked through the attached paperwork it listed torque values for various vehicles, the newest vehicles were 1964 so I would assume that was the year it was made/sold.

Is that Sunnen hone for con rods?

Very well done Wil, actually one is a 68, and if the other was visible in the picture was a 69 fender. I will clean up and do a direct paint and exchange on RF, and the mangled LF, will give me a few patch panels for my existing fender on the old car. I have a 68 4 door hardtop, which means no framed glass on the doors, and no center pillar, which in no way changes the fact it's my daily driver, and of little value. Not terribly bad on gas given it's size, 307cid with 2 barrel and a slip-n-slide Powerglide backin it up.

As to the Sunnen, I think they are most known as rod hones, yes, also for king pins and the like on older vehicles. It was destined for the trash, but the junker in me could not let that happen, I got the machine and a rack of hones for the cost of gas to pick her up a few years back. I have no idea if, or when I will ever use it. In honesty if I could sell it for $150.00 it would already be gone. When I do engines I farm all the machine work out anyway so the reality is I will likely just never use it!

Hardtops rule over "post" sedans, no matter how many doors they have. I don't think it was until 1970 that they started putting bulges in the quarters and fenders of the cars, but not on the station wagons and El Caminos. This created the need for different parking light lenses for the bulged cars and non-bulged everything else.

Just another useless fact like the millions of others stored in my brain.

In the world where tools are actually used as opposed to merely being "man jewelry", this is what boxes actually look like and these are well arranged. At least that has been my experience prior to joining this board and seeing tools treated like fine China.

I do not think I would want every drawer I have quite as congested as they are if I were making a living out of my boxes, but I am not; so I find it much easier to justify a bit of overcrowding. As the pictures show, I really do not have room for more or bigger boxes, this is a 2 car garage, what you see is a result of too little room and not being willing to part with the tools I have accumulated. I will say though it is very true that I know exactly where every tool I have is located, I could set in the house drinking coffee and if asked tell you to the drawer where you would find any small or large tool I own. For now I am alright, I can fit a 1992 Lincoln Town Car in there, keep it heated, have tunes or TV and fix what I need to so it does what it has to, though it is cramped. I figure on moving to something larger one of these days so till then it will just have to do the way it is, but rest assured I can get any tool I need from those cramped drawers and boxes as I need the tool.

When I was working out of my boxes, they were quite crowded, but arranged precisely.

It not only saved time knowing exactly where everything was, but it was instantly obvious to me if anything was missing. It wasn't laid out like man jewelry, but set up for efficiency.

Now, with my tools at home, I simply don't have enough drawer space (or any other kind of space) and everything is a mess.

Only thing i don't like when it comes to tool and storage is tools that aren't used. when people have them almost as "trophies" (this doesn't apply to vintage/collectors edition tools)

I buy old tools, rare tools, sought after tools etc and i use them. they're all looked after and cleaned. never damaged or abused. but i like to use them. seems a shame for people to spend so much money on nice tools, not to use them at all. i have a 62-year old ratchet, a 52-year old special wrench, some 44-year old side cutters and so on. they all get used.

Nice to see a place like hholmberg's, where everything is used and cared for. regardless of tidyness you know it's functional and you know everything has its purpose and its place.
