I agree I have an older B&D variable speed (BUFFMASTER) I picked it up back in 93 I use it on a regular basis 5-10 times a month on customers cars. The only thing i did to it was replace the cord (Dry Rot). I believe the Dewalt is the same exact thing only it's got a new color scheme.

Yup.... the dewalt polisher is the same as the old B&D professional. It's an old tool... I wonder when they will update it

if your not really good wheeling a car I would start off with a Porter-cable DA polisher

I have both this and the Makita and use the PC 3 x as much as the bigger buffer and for foam pads lakes are the best

This is the model that the professional detailer that works at my brothers lot uses and he uses it all day in a production environment; seems happy with it. Oh, by the way he has had Snap-on and Porter Cable in the past. He gets the Dewalts rebuilt when they wear out; Dewalt has a flat fee for rebuilding their tools and have parts on their website.

Why does that griots buffer have dust collection?
To suck up the wax dust. The Griot's piece is made in China, BTW.
I have a Porter Cable and love it.
As far as the original question goes, I'm not stupid enough to pay the price for the SnapOn, nor am I stupid enough to buy something like that from Harbor Fright.

I bought the HF a few months ago on sale for $20, it rattles like a spray paint can, but does what its supposed to do otherwise.
I took it back to HF once to complain about the rattle, and they said go get another one, but we went through half a dozen in the store checking them out and all of them sounded the same. OTOH each one we tested in the store had the box marked as defective and they took all the pads and accessories and gave them to me as spares.
Plenty of pro's buy the Dewalt and Porter Cable, and sell them about once a year and buy new, way cheaper than a rebuild.

PC all the way. I have several and they had worked great. All have many, many hours on them and have never skipped a beat. (I detail exotics for fun.....)

I have one of the Horrible Fright versions, I use it with an 8in pad for grinding paint off. When it craps out I take it back to HF & tell them "hey, I onlly bought this thing last month!" & they give me a new one ;)
For detailing I have the Porter Cable & for buffing out paint etc I have the Dewalt.

I've got the Ultimate Detailing Machine(UDM), which is just a little stouter than the PC, and the Makita 9227CX3 kit. The Makita kicks ass, end of story. It dominates the detailing world. Its only competitors are the Dewalt and Metabo. Metabo is supposed to be very smooth, but it isn't cheap either.
