View Full Version : My best day at the Pawn Shops

Picked up an SDD22 - Small Snap on Phillips #2 for 10 cents. Went to another pawn shop and found an FP22A (Snap on Phillips #2 3/8 drive socket) for 27 cents (With tax). $29 worth of Snap on tools for 27 cents!

What I found is when I discovered these in their "loose tools" section they didn't particularly care about the price or what it was. Try it sometime!

It sure is fun, when you can total the "list price" vs paid. I can remember some great deals over the years. It can become just a bit addicting, especially with .25 sockets.

If your pawn shop experience is like Elroy's. It takes $29.00 worth of digging to turn up 29 cents worth of tools. Elroy has been known to spend an hour looking through 350 pounds of broken junk to find a single dollar tool.

If you have the time we got the tool.

I would like to find good deals at pawn shops. Nowadays I don't know if the gas is worth it to drive around to different shops.
I also don't like the dirty looks they give me when I'm digging through the loose tools for too long.

None of the pawn shops around here have anything worth owning. Most of the stuff is totally worn out or just generally beat up. Even with a "warranty" its not always worth it. They ask 75% of new for some really trashed S/O, etc stuff. I guess the shops around here are just greedy because I have yet to find anything not labeled Taiwan or China in the "cheapy" bins. Heck they'd pull the single sockets out and charge you $15 because it said S/O lol. Oh well... good scores though! Certainly wish I had that sort of luck around here.

Funny, being the dedicated tool troll that I am the only thing that ever distracted me in the least during my treasure digging missions might be a fine looking piece of tail passing by, I never gave a thought or so much as a glance to the to the pawnbroker! :pimpflash

What's funny to me is when they sell HF tools and mark up the price. They also put them in the locked glass cases to give the illusion they are valuable.

I spent some time making the rounds of RSO/Cargolargo, Cash America and a couple other pawn shops over on Noland but never ran down old 40hwy. There are a couple over in KS by my work I stop at from time to time. Then again I guess JoCo pawn shops charge JoCo prices! lol... (its a KC thing)

Ya but you are right, it's true, try those on old 40 hwy and I hate to say it but head for the poorer parts of town and I think you will do better! Stay on the MO side of the line and around mid town.

Yes, but they can't catch them all. Sometimes you can get lucky.

Pawn shops around here the "tail" is considerably worse than the broken Taiwan tools. With the tools I can just wash my hands later, my eyes could easily be damaged for life.

I like diggin around in the loose sockets drawer because it reminds me of when I was a kid and I had a huge box of lego's to dig around in just to find that one special piece.

Look in the yellow Pages under "Pawn Shop" All cities have them. As at a flea market, you must know your prices.

They are a great place to spend a couple of hours looking a stuff you would like to have, but don't really need. If you really needed it you would have it.

I've noticed this too. I don't think some of this Pawnbrokers take into account, ebay, craigslist or hell, even amazon.com when they have a sale. I was looking at an extra palm sander. I could get it new on sale for $40 on amazon and the guy wanted $35 for it, in the case.

What's the most you guys will pay for sockets and wrenches. I've been collection BP combo wrenches (old Made in USA models). But haven't wanted to pay more than a few bucks for each.

Pawn shops and flea markets seem similar in my experience; it generally goes like this: dirt cheap or they ask the moon for stuff! I've actually seen some Snapon stuff like torque wrenches and they were marked higher then Snapon.com; then again it depends on the pawn shop! The one down the street has much cheaper prices and I know the owner and have been purchasing stuff from him for 10+ years. It actually pays to get to know your flea market and pawn shop vendors/owners.

Yeah, you're probably right. I wanted to get three or four cheap palm sanders. He had dozens, a lot of them crappy. And he wouldn't go below $30 on any of them.

Too bad you can't just call all the pawn shops in the area and ask if they have any Snapon tools priced well below market. ;)

Couldn't hurt; all they can say is "no"... it depends on the pawn shop, some are motivated to sell and others will let stuff stay there for years. Around here they want to move stuff and keeping it on the shelf doesn't help them make money; YMMV!!! If you go consistently enough and get to know your pawn shop people it helps; they will get to know you. They even set stuff aside for me!

NOTHING pricks up a sellers ears like calling and asking. BTDT call them and watch the price go up, or even more annoying I was digging through something like 5 old toolboxes and found half a dozen Snapon sockets, handed them to the seller and he gave me a price and was handing them back and I ask, anymore Snapon sockets, then he wouldn't sell them to me.

I had to educate the guys I work with on Harbor Freight, including managers that have been in the business for 12+ years. They were loaning high dollar on the HF tools simply because they could not find the brand/model no. If it doesn't say Snap-On or Craftsman a lot of these guys and gals have no idea what to do with it and given the employee turn around in most pawn shops they could not care either.
