I was looking for something and came across a very old 1 1/2" 5/8" drive socket. I used to have a bunch, but not anymore. Does anyone do anything with 5/8" drive anymore, or is it just a dead horse?

5/8" drive is dead, and has been for a while. I'd still love to get my hands on a full set for my field box though, then I could drop most of my 1/2" and 3/4" SAE stuff.

I Collect 5/8 drive Snap on. I have maybe 50-60 of the sockets, and lots of the drive tools.

Someone must have made a 5/8" drive impact wrench at one time. I have a Snap-on 5/8" drive impact swivel adapter and some 5/8" drive Proto impact sockets that I got in a tool box at a yard sale. I think the date code on the swivel was mid 1960s if I remember right.

A few months ago I was at a garage sale and bought a coffee can full of impact sockets. I thought they where 3/4" inch drive but when I tried to use them they wouldn't fit. They are herbrand impact sockets. Wondering who would spec impact sockets in a 5/8" drive?

I have wondered where the 5/8 impact wrenches are! I have some 60's 5/8 impacts laying around too. I have yet to see an impact that would drive them though. I guess you could use an adaptor.

Well, I used to have a herd of 5/8" sockets, but they were all old, some damaged, and NOT Snap On. Some of them even said Japan on them. Anyway, I thought I had found a Snap On 1/2" drive 1 1/2" socket until I picked it up and saw that totally odd size square hole in the bottom. I'll take some pictures later. It is covered in grease right now.

Those pictures are really something. That is a piece of history. It really is strange that I have seen 5/8" drive sockets around several times, but NEVER a 5/8 ratchet or bar.

5/8 is an interesting bump on the tool history time line... but unless you are a collector, your time and money is best spent elsewhere.

Oh, I didn't intend to imply that I was going to intentionally get any. I have most of the 1/2" drive that I could ever need, and that is generally as big as I need. I don't work on the giant stuff anymore, so I don't need 1" drive and rarely 3/4" drive. Anyway, I don't need to be spending a bunch of money right now.
