That is a 1/4 or 1/3 scale model dealers demo'd on the trucks. It is real, just not full size!
Kinda like this:

I says 60" wide and 45" tall, so it's small but not that small.

It looks real by looking at the items around it. If so, it really is a great deal.

They are real. And the do work just like a full size chest. But often on Ebay, they are often cleverly photographed without any frame of reference of the size. This guy was honest enough to at least put the dimensions in.
The price of this one is a little below what they usually sell for on Ebay. But I have seen people bid crazy high prices for these because they think they are getting a real full sized box.

Do they use KRA-size slides or something that are smaller? Can you load it up like a "real" one?

Here is a link to one that was sold that provides a good description.

I didn't realize SO made models like that, so I was busy trying to find a toy company that made a kids box realistic enough to throw an SO badge on and sell.
If I still worked building racks, drafting, and doing small electronics work I would think about picking something like that up to house all of the precision tools.
Now that I know it's real (and pretty cool) I am trying to think of good enough use to justify offering $500 for it.

I should have guessed you would become interested in this...
With the exchange rate you like so much this box will only cost you about the same as a carton of smokes. I can pick it up for you and send it as a gift in exchange for some of your orange handled overflow inventory.
I even know a painter that will color match it to SO orange and paint it for cheap ...

Never.. ;)
Don't need another box, just got a side box for mine, and trying to negotiate a full-height side locker for the other side. Oh, and my box is red. Only orange for the hard handles.

I could see a crooked ebay seller scamming these off as the real full size deal!!

those are sooo cool, just not for the money
if I was a SO collector I would so want one. or if I was rich I would get one as a toy for my kid.
as a home machinist I could use the top box to hold cutting tools.
I know one guy that has a sherline benchtop lathe that uses one of the small SO boxes (the type that are about 10'' tall for the top and bottom box together) to hold the tooling for the lathe

When did SNAP-On start selling these things? They're excellent models -- are these things still being made/sold by SNAP-ON, or has this become a high priced collector's market.

I have them in the 1997 Snap on Catalog, and apparently they were no longer made after 2003.
A quick Ebay check of "snap on scale" will pop many of these up.
I don't think that they have crazy high collectible prices...yet... Most that seem to go for a lot of money have been disingenuously listed and look like full size ones. I have even seen them say "free shipping" and they sell for $500+ or so (I'm talking the Micro boxes shown below) and I guess the buyers don't catch on to it.
I believe they also made them in 1/2 size or 3/4 size as well (Don't quote me exactly on the proportion) but I have seen the Tool wagons on Ebay that were rather large, and were used as display models for the dealers and were definitely not micro boxes. I believe the Original Posters link was to a Truck Display box.
Here is a photo of the micro boxes from the 1997 Catalog.

Thanks Blacknwhitepit -- that is so cool. I have a friend who would love this stuff and would make a great Christmas present. I'll keep checking e-bay.

I am old enough to remember when a 60" x 45" tool chest would have been considered HUGE! :)
