Yes, I have mutiples of everything except some specialty tools. As things got upgraded, changed to the latest improved version, or were found as a bargain, they went home.

I try and stay as far away from Mechanic work at home as I can...plus with cost of tools/gas etc etc..just cant justify 2 sets..if I need to do maint on my Truck/car I'll bring home what I need in a tote. the way the economy is now and dealerships businesses closing etc I'd rather save those $ for if I ever need it.

Ditto. I actually have more specialty tools at home though, especially if you count bigger stuff. Welder/plasma/torch/press/tube bender, etc.

I'm still working on filling the first. I'm considering buying a van and making a ramp for it to make my box more mobile instead of buying two sets.

Glad some of you guys are up as well -- I'll be checkin' in more regualry at that time.

I have all my automotive tools from when I worked on cars at home now. No need for them working on dozers and other machines. I have doubles, triples, quadruples of all the basics. No air tools at home yet though. Once I move into my own place, I am sure I will set up a nice shop. Although as someone else pointed out, I'd rather leave mechanics stuff at work. I try not to do to much to cars at home unless it is my own or for family. That's why I have started to get woodworking tools.

when I had my shop I had the largest set there. that set is now in my garage

currently I have:
the mechanics box in the garage with the Mechanics tools
the machinist box with the machinist tools
a box I keep over at the shop which is just basic mechanics tools (for when I need tools there)
the box I keep at my dads which is basic mechanics tools (for when I need tools there)
the general tool box where I keep hammers and the basic plumbing and construction type tools.

Just as an advisory to the younger guy's. The only reason I have my older tools is because they were at dad's and friends shops.

A messy divorce with disappearing assets cost me over 40k in tools. Thankfully her and her buddies did not know about the scattered sets.

I have a lot of tools down at the garage (which isn't far from my house). I consider most specialty (even the ones that wouldn't be, would realistically require a lift at home to use). I've been down there a bit lately and been a spare hand when needed (or eyes or whatever). I've got the nickname of the toolman down there, and while a lot of their customers know me from elsewhere, a few know me from down there. They tend to laugh and say half of the tools in the shop are mine (if I break something, I replace it, I've even replaced things I haven't broke, because I knew how handy they were/are). They do try to buy a lot of the stuff I bring down there (some of it is duplicates from home, others requres air which I don't have at home, currently).
I know the owner (almost family, mom's first grade boyfriend LOL), and know he has got almost 50 years in. When he retires, the guy who started down there, when they tried to get me to start down there at 16, may or may not take over (we will see, budgets, etc). I am set up so I could get all my tools out in a day, and someday that may come, until then, I have access to my tools, their tools, lifts etc. and it keeps me from having to do things like fuel pump, clutch, etc. in my driveway.

I am not married, so I currently don't have to worry about it. Heck, I currently have one of my cabinets in my living room, because I am trying to rearange the shop, and can't quite get the layout how I am comfortable. I've even thought of making a small shop upstairs. (if you have ever seen the World's fastest Indian, I could live in his house/shop and be happy):)

08-29-2008, 05:57 PM
I have one plus sets of wrenches at work in addition to all the other tools, and the set of tools my dad had at his house, plus the set I had at home. Having merged all of mine and dad's home tools together, I have three sets of fractional combination wrenches, two sets of fractional double open ends, two sets of metric combination wrenches, and a couple of sets each of metric and fractional 3/8 drive sockets, etc, etc. PLUS, the "grab and go" box I keep at home, a Kennedy cantilever box with oddballs, and cheaper wrenches (Taiwan made Great neck that are pretty good quality) Proto Challenger Metric, etc. When I have to travel or go out and fix anything, I just grab this box and go with it.

Actually it was the other way around. She was cheating on me.
Also draining accounts and selling items for almost nothing.

Legal system was a joke. No help at all. Her and her "partners" were allowed to get away with around 120k of takings.

Oh well it's turning on her now. She looks to be 90 and only 48. Her kids hate her with a passion and no one trustes her.

whoa whoa whoa. there's no way I'd fit my car audio tools in a bag, let alone 10. fact I just had a krl locker and riser added to my 3wide box just to get more space back...

I have a second set at home, some of the nicer tools actually stay @ home.

When we moved to a new service facility they decided to supply everyone with the same toolbox so the shop would have a uniform look, but I prefer the Snapon I brought home over the ones they supplied us.

If your boss did that to a coworker, you better get your own books in order before your tax man comes along.

That is not someone you should be working for Moose. It shows a total disrespect for people AND the law. As was mentioned before, I would also suggest you get your own tax information from your boss to ensure his compliance with regard to your potential tax libilities.

Good luck!!

I'm not paying tax. If i was paying tax, i wouldn't be able to live on the money i make. I'm trying to start up a company so that i can be self-employed and that would allow me to pay my taxes and could also benefit me in other ways. Or, if i find another job ditch the mug i work for and go somewhere legit.

I don't know how they operate over there, but I have a GOOD idea of how they operate over here.
You just knowingly admitted to tax evassion.
And, since your coworker is getting hit, and will mention/show paystubs that show tax withheld, while your coworker (if here) would have to go after his employer in court, the IRS, would start auditing his books, find you working for him, and ask for YOUR records.

Moose-LandTran
08-30-2008, 02:42 PM
There are no records of me working there. He doesn't even know my last name, in fact no-one i work with knows it.

This is why i want to register a company and become self-employed. So i can create invoices to his company (without actually giving them to him) and then when i get paid by cheque, that goes into my company account as payment for a service. This also means other jobs i do, people can get invoices for work carried out.

I don't think your boss or you will find that to amusing. When I figured out what it would cost me to be an independent contractor and make the same wage rate I made working for someone it came out to I have to bill my time out at atleast twice what I wanted to take home. Also this means you will have to deal with taxes, unemployment insurance, workmans compensation and dealing with the hassle of paper work.

My set at home is almost as complete as the set at work but my sockets only go up to 1 1/4" at home compared to 2 3/8" at work. My wrenches at home only go up to 1 5/8" and at work they go to 1 7/8". I do have more automotive specialty at home along with my welders and plasma cutters and a much nicer tool box.

wilbilt
08-30-2008, 07:19 PM
I brought it all home several years ago.
I have double, triple, quadruplicate of sockets and wrenches. Less duplication on specialty items.

Most is at home in the shed/shop, some are at work, more in the work van, some in the house.

It never fails, though...the one item I need is always someplace else. I need more tools!

I want a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter or Vario van to have all my tools in to go mobile. Friend of mine has one supplied by his company, when he needs to fix sometime in-situ, he has his work van with everything he needs.

I'd like that, could make better money if i had that.

the mercs a good choice. Better than the LT which pop their clutches every 10k.

Far better than the transits which do their clutches, flywheels and starters every 6 months.

Vans are super easy to work on.

Moose-LandTran
08-30-2008, 08:13 PM
The early Sprinters seem to be the most reliable, but suffer body rust in a big way. LTs are alright, but still not quite as good as Sprinters, despite being almost identical.

New Transits suck. Especially the front wheel drive ones. We have some at work and they're crap, interiors are crap too. We have an '07 Iveco Daily which i like, but is a little wobbly in the corners because it's an extra high roof. The new LDVs seem pretty crappy too.

If i chose one, it's be an early five on the floor Sprinter.

chammyman
08-30-2008, 08:21 PM
all vans rot badly.

They LT's are a cheaper version of the sprinter, not made for heavy duty use.

The transits are good in theory, the front wheel drive ones are all 2 litres and crap. The rwd are 2.4's and easier to work on. They have lots of issues, from clutches, starters, wheel bearings, injection pumps to pistons picking up.

I hate ivecos with a passion.

The LDV is just a cheap crap version of the transit.

The old transits and LDV 'sherpas' see if one comes your way with a burst belt take the job on, they are a dream, the pushrods bend, thats it. Ok sometimes a rocker gets done in as well but its rare. You can either get new pushrods or just stick em in a vice and striaghten them out. Yes you should renew but plenty have had them straightened and done another 100k with ease.

Moose-LandTran
08-30-2008, 08:25 PM
I did a steering box on a Sherpa not that long ago. My mate was like "oh no, they're terrible, i wouldn't do a steering box on that blah blah blah.." I went for it. A little awkward, but with a trolley jack and a couple axle stands to support the engine crossmember and it's out in no time. I did mine in the road without problems.
