Hey guys, I'm replacing some drywall on my garage ceiling and while it's easy to follow the joist to cut the old drywall out (with my sawzall,) I was just curious if they make a special tool to help cut that extra 3/4" off to expose half the 2x stud. (To have something to screw to.)

Basically it would be nothing more than a dremel / rotozip attachement with a cutting wheel and a guide that follows the joist.

I've always just done in the old fashion way with a level and a blade, but figured there has to be a better way.

I just draw a line with a ruler and cut along the line.

How big of a piece are you replacing and is the ceiling insulated ?

Why are you cutting?? Make sure there is no stud in the way. Mark it then score it with a box cutter.

What I was going to suggest is to sister in a furring strip (rip a 2x4 to 1" x 1.5") to the side of the existing joist. This way you don't have to worry about hitting the joist dead center with your cut and possibly disturbing the screws/nails holding the piece of rock you're leaving up.

That's a good idea. I might just do that as your right it's a guessing game as to if I'll hit any nails.
