I just bought this off Craigslist. It's a Snap-On Power Mechanics VE1017A Wall Cabinet. Images are from the original seller. I'll clean it out, take the dent out, and I hope find some of the original tools. Maybe ChadS will have some insight into what tools fit inside the cabinet.

All the Snap-On boxes and cabinets that I've seen here, I couldn't resist. One of these days, a Classic 78!

Thanks!

Anyone know what years this model was made? I'd like to find what original tools were offered with it. I'd love to find NOS blank pegboard that would fit.

This set would be later than my catalogs go (my newest one is 1953). It looks like the ratchet is a long flex head, judging by the shadow for it. I dont know when they started selling flex heads, but I would think this is probably early-mid 60's, but thats just a guess. I have not studied this era of Snap-on tools, so unfortunately I cant be of much help.

I have two 60's catalogs: 1963 and 1967. The cabinet is not mentioned in the 1963, but a variety of "VE" series cabinets are shown in the 1967 catalog, but not yours.

The catalog indicates that VE is Snap-on's "EDUCATIONAL TOOL SETS AND TRAINING AIDS" series and the 67 catalog shows VE-1003-S up to VE-1007-S, but also says "ask about our complete educational sets on boards", so they may have offered this unit as soon as 1967 or maybe later.

It may be blasphemy, but I'd pull the shadow board out of it and add a couple of shelves inside it to make the cabinet useful in the shop...store safety glasses, ear plugs, dust masks, bandaids, tweezers, cans of WD40, Brake and Carb cleaner, etc. etc.
Keep the inner board.
I can't help it--I gotta have useful stuff in the shop.

I was thinking of getting a steel peg-board (S-O sells them, but I don't know if they do so to size), to hang some other tools in it. Keep the original board, and have it in an area where guys need some access to tools, but that I don't want floating around and getting lost.

The guy I bought it from said he was told it was early 80's vintage.

I'm pulling out the pegboard in a couple of weeks. Eventually, I'd like to get all the original tools, but this new collecting bug I've caught from all you guys is going to have to get under control:bounce:

I want to get some blank red steel peg board. Does anyone know where S-O gets theirs? I'm going to do it up with tools for a certain "production room" at our shop. Mainly screwdrivers, allen wrenches (T-Handle), hammers, and some other wrenches.

I hope to keep better track of our stuff this way. And give only the shift-supervisor the key.

What sort of production room? Just curious...

Also that logo is older than an early 80's vintage. I have a 26" rollcab dated 1982 and the logo is the much newer style. That "flat" style logo on that one is certainly a 60's/70's type logo. I might actually have some of the pliers in there from about the same era. S/O Vacuum grips (the handles have little "dots" in the metal). Not sure about the other stuff but I'm with the guys who say late 60's/early 70's.

Wow, that brings memories flooding back. When I was a kid (grew up on a school campus), the shop teacher had boxes like these hanging around the shop. I always imagined someday I'd have my own tools hanging in red boxes with white outlines for the tools. Never happened, but it's a great memory!
