Have you ever purchased Tools off eBay?

I see some great deals on there all of the time. Deals on 'New' tools! I probably would not buy a power tool from someone, but I'm considering some combination wrenches, stubby wrenches and ratcheting wrenches that I've found on there listed as 'New' and the pictures show that they are.


Good idea or bad idea ????

New and used, I have bought both. If you don't mind a few scratches, you can buy Snap-on and Mac stuff for about 50% off normal, which includes shipping. You just have to watch it and play it out. Just about anything you miss will come back up again at sometime.

I have bought a lot of pieces off eBay. I haven't had a bad experience yet.
Some of the stuff I've picked up:
14" vert. bandsaw ($132.00) I converted it to metal cutting for under $200. (total)
12" variable speed bandsaw
Machinist angle plates
3/4" L & RH taps
A couple sets of C5 Corvette brake calipers
Model kits and car parts...
If you have a question ask the seller. If I get a questionable response I'll let it slide.
You have to set a limit for your bids and DON'T get caught up in a bidding war.

Ebay is a great way to get tools. I've bought a lot of new or very close to new Snap-On tools for 40% to 60% off. I've even bought Snap-On boxes. Sometimes you can find sets of tools from ex-students that purchased at a discount.

Just keep in mind you aren't "buying" from Ebay...they are just electronic want ads. as long as you take reasonable steps to know who the seller is, it's a great big bargin store. I've bought and sold about 300 things from motorcycle parts to guitars to construction materials with only one minor bad experience.

I've made about 110 transactions on ebay and have yet to have any problems. The only "tools" I've ever gotten off ebay is a hand held pump brake bleeder and check valves for an O/A set up. I mostly buy car parts and model trains. The biggest purchase I made was a used Toshiba laptop.

Like what was mentioned above, if you don't feel comfortable with the person then don't deal with them. There have been listings for things I've wanted that I've passed up since they gave off a bad vibe, if you know what I mean.

I have bought a bunch of Makita 12v tools and batteries from seller M3NUTS.

Also got some Snap-On ratches and sockets on ebay.

Out of several hundred ebay transactions, only had a couple go bad. Worst one was a tool purchase though, about $175. The guy was posting stuff he did not have and immediately declared bankruptcy, naming us as creditors to keep us from going after him. Total BS. Got about $125 back through Paypal but I would have preferred to wring his neck given a choice. Funny thing was after I had bid, I checked out his "about me" page and if I had seen it first I would not have bid on his item. As mentioned above, check out the seller's feedback, "me" page, and anything else. Do not bid if anything gives you an uneasy feeling.

I've purchased 3 cars, one truck. one guitar and amplifier, a drill press, sheet metal brake and shear, band saw, c-clamps, plasma cutter, Roper/Whitney punch and tons of other stuff..know what you're buying and check the sellers feedback...

Have purchased multiple hand and power tools off ebay. So far none of the deals has gone bad. The rules are 1. Know what you are shopping for. 2. Read the listing carefully there are traps in shipping, handling, and payment terms in some auctions. 3. Look for a seller with a reasonable amount of sales and a high rating 4. Use caution on items that may be too good to be true. 5. Look at the pictures carefully and ask questions if you need to know something.

In central Kansas I do not know of a Cornwell or Wright dealer so I had no other choice in using tools that I was familiar with. I have also purchased a number of power tools again with only one frustration a wrong shipment that the vendor bent over backwards to fix. There are many people who have purchased items that are good deals

Paypal has also provided a good way secure way to pay for your purchases.

I've done several hundred transactions on eBay. I've sold a lot more than I've bought toolwise, but I just scored a Craftsman 1/4" air ratchet for $16. It ought to be here early next week.

I have bought only tools on ebay, and everything has gone beautifully, except one transaction. It was for some Armstrong tools. I hope that I never meet the guy :evil:

In general, the people selling tools tend to be honest individuals, at least in my experience. Now buying other stuff on ebay... you'll have to consult my wife for that!

Look for an ebay seller that lives in your area.This gives you the advantage of picking the item up locally and saving on s/h. With that advantage you can go a little higher and still come out better than the guy that has to pay shipping. Always check out the bid history of the person you are bidding against and the sellers history to make sure the other bidder hasn't run the bid up for the seller before. Just my 2 cents.

I've done over 300 buy and sell transactions on Ebay with no problems and landed some great buys.

I have bought a ton of Makita corded and cordless tools and batteries from an Ebay seller with the user name M3NUTS who is first class. He ships the day payment is received and packs everything super well. Pull up Ebay and take a look at what he is selling. I noticed recently that he advertises that he is an authorized Makita distributor so that means you won't have any problems with the warrentee if needed.

I buy lots of tools and other stuff on there all the time. I have over 200 transactions split between two accounts. All but two of them have been very positive. Just be careful, do not bid too early and drive the price up. Lots of people get caught up in "bid-wars". This does nothing but inflate the price. Most bids take place in the last 3 minutes to 5 seconds of auction end.

Btw, I just scored 3 brand new Snap-on wrenches (3/4, 5/8,9/16) for $15 (included shipping) and a new in box IR 2131a impact gun for $65.

If you can, look late at night (2-4 a.m. western time) for auctions that end during that time frame. SOMETIMES, there are very desirable tool items that end during thatr time that do not get many bids due to the oddball time it was listed.

Never bought tools off ebay but My dad and I have made about 20 transactions for car and kart parts, both buying and selling. Only experience we had that was even remotly bad was a seller who cancled the auction, but we got all our money back and they left good feedback. Neighboor bought a car off ebay, a year old. Flew out and drove it home, no problems.

just make sure the seller is legit and DONT get off the E-Bay path no side deals

Shoot...I've put over 1/2 my tool collection together from ebay purchases. Even have a spreadsheet on all the purchases with list prices. So far, I'm averaging well below 50% of list price. So, basically I'm getting Snap On, Mac, Matco, SK tools for Craftsman prices.
