Sunday I found a KRL-1003 on Craigslist. I was able to get it for $2700. It has a few dings here and there but over all it is real good shape. THEY ARE HEAVEY!!! I have been looking for over a year!! http://i335.photobucket.com/albums/m446/kidder123/48EABFB90006BD470000703822070208539.jpg This is a picture at the former owners home. I think I did good. Deal!

What do you think the riser would be worth if I sold it?

OMG that thing is beautiful! Looks like your "dream box" to me! How do you like it? Maybe that is a dumb question! LOL!

How do I like it. Long story. I live in a condo with no garage!! It is now at a friends house with all the drawers out and the riser off. It was so heavy we had to remove them to lift it. I now have to buy a house to put it in. I saw the deal and went for it.

hard to say, its the shallower riser and doesn't have the stainless walls.. I thought it sold for around $3000 new..

$3000 new - that's nuts! You think I could sell the riser for $800?

With the way the stock market \ housing market is going pretty soon will be the time to buy a house.

Why would you want to sell it. It looks great the way it is. I would love to have the locking hutch for my KRL.

Why don't you like the riser?

The box is huge - I see no use for the riser. I am not in a shop setting. Yes, it has holes in the top. I thought I could remove the SS top and fix some of the dents and tig up the holes and polish the top.

If you don't work in a shop; maybe that riser is less useful; risers, to me seem to be helpful when you are in a work environment where theft/security is a issue! For example; say you are working on stuff and its time for lunch; you can put your stuff on top and lock the riser, go to lunch... secure with no worry about your tools walking away... :)

Is it possible to remove the SS top and knock out the dents? Or is the SS top glued to some type of board?

qft. since I added my riser, if its getting late and I dont feel like putting everything away, I just push it to the back wall and lock it up. Plus, you get a little overhead storage.

glued to a piece of wood. remove the topmost drawer on the right and open the top drawer to access 1 bolt on each side.

That is my favorite color box of all. I have the lowly Craftsman Griplatch in midnight blue because I can't afford a box like that. I got mine on a once a year absolute give away sale. I would love to upgrade to that very box one day. That is just absolutely an awesome piece. I love the riser...keep it. They are so nice to be able to close at night, even if you aren't in a shop setting.

I have to stop finding tools I need so I can afford to buy a better box.

Congratulations.

a390st - just watch your local craigslists and save up. I was not going to pay anymore then $3000 with a SS top and I just kept an eye out.

you'd be surprised at what the right SO dealer will give you for a trade-in on your current box to put towards a new one.

My old guy gave me more than I originally paid for my Craftsman, and $700 off my old KRL 2bay. Then, a year later, I traded that in on my krl1023 and got more than I paid originally for the 2bay. My SO dealer says he has a bunch of guys who are looking for deals on Craftsman and would rather run a truck account than pay at sears.

Now isn't the best time to get a huge box unless you can afford to pay cash and even then, I would hold off. With 1 in 5 car dealers on the verge of failing this year, there will be alot of large boxes on the market soon sadly.

I've never understood the use of a riser, seems like a waste of space to me. I would rather have nothing, or a top chest.

That is NOT the $3000 riser. That riser is around $1700. I have the same riser on my KRL1003. I got the box and stainless top on CL for $1300, and bought the riser new.

$1755, this one is 21" deep, and a 2 piece folding front door, the older style:
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=storage&item_ID=82185&group_ID=20018&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

$3140, full depth of the KRL1003 box (- the front lip of the stainless top), and a single piece front door:
http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=78878&group_ID=20024&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

Regardless, the price is a very good deal.

I've never understood the use of a riser, seems like a waste of space to me. I would rather have nothing, or a top chest.

I use the top of my 1023 as my primary workspace in my shop. although adding the riser now limits the height of items I can easily work with, the ability to lock up a multitude of items quickly is a plus for me. Trivial I guess, but I used to leave my ipods over on my test bench during the course of the day. now, I have a mount attached to the back splash of my riser and a cable ran out the back over to the test bench. end of the day, drop the riser and lock it up.

I pondered if just doing a top chest and getting a separate work table was the better way to go but the 1023 is too high as it is, adding a chest would make access to the top drawers annoying i think.

whoops... I looked all over SO website trying to find the half depth riser and thought I found one.

I stand corrected. still a damn good price.

Well, saving up would mean that I couldn't get metric flare nut wrenches, deep offset wrenches, deep 3/8 impact sockets, an S80 ratchet, a new air compressor, some more screwdrivers, a new cordless drill and some cryobits, left handed drill bits..............

Does it ever end?

To be honest, I actually am keeping an eye on Craigslist for some deals on boxes. I figure in the next year I might find a Snap on or maybe even a Matco box. With the difficulty in getting a car loan I read about on the front page, I would bet some businesses will go out.

good deal on a matco box in the classifieds right now if you're close to Md. I thought about picking it up but don't really need it.

To say the least, the riser is a good place to mount a florescent light. . .

kwhitelaw, did you ever get your box back together the way it's supposed to be?

nissan_crawler
10-07-2008, 03:59 AM
If you don't have a lid over your box, you don't need a light to see.:lol_hitti

I guess they work for some, I put my tools away every day, and like having the full top of my box to use, though.

haha, I did admit defeat and put the top drawers back how they originally were...

I did move the larger middle drawer up to right below the 2 wide drawers so I can stand my sockets up in that one and not have to use the large top drawer. I also priced out one of the side drawers but the deeper version as the current side drawers dont really hold much.

But yes, no cutting the box or rewelding. lol

No I did not get the "Bose Wave radio" with it. I did get a few sockets and extensions (after I removed all the drawers I found some stuff that fell inside the box).

Question:
The SS top has a few dents in it I would like to tap them out. Has anyone ever done this? Has anyone ever had to remove the wood from the bottom on the SS top?

nissan_crawler
10-07-2008, 02:25 PM
Try a lead strap before you take it apart. Google it, you'll see waht I mean.

kidder
10-07-2008, 02:51 PM
nissan_crawler - Google "lead strap" ??? I did. I have no idea what you mean?

I was wondering if anyone has separated the SS top from the wood substrate. I do not think tapping the dents out would be to hard to do.
