View Full Version : Name Your Garage!

As a frequent visitor here, it's kind of boring to see new guys posting "new guy here" or "new guy's garage". perhaps a suggestion in the garage gallery for anyone who's about to start a thread about thier project to give it a name!
Mine's "Garage-Mahal" <---- easy to remember and return to.
or
"My Retirement Garage"
or
"Hot Rod Dad's Garage"
or
"Chuck's Crib"
or
"Moneyhole"
This way, if there is a reference in another thread, it's easier to find. Perhaps let or ask the "owners" of those thread to come up with a clever name.
What do you think?

Yours is Garage-Mahal? Do a search, I think you'll find about 2 dozen others using the same reference.

Joe,
You're right. I should have called it Reflexx's Garage-Mahal. It's like Limbaugh or Dr. Laura, they give advice, doesn't mean they use it themselves!

I did name mine, New Guy's 30' x 35' Garage. Well actually I should have called it a shop. Something about the building codes being less restrictive with a shop then a garage, why I do not know. If it is better to call it a shop, then a shop it is.

I have come to the conclusion that no matter how unique a name may sound, it has been used somewhere before. I have a street sign that hangs over my present garage that was a present from my children and reads, “Dad’s Toy Shop.” Long before I came across GarageJunkies they labeled my new garages, “GarageMahal.” Since I realized that name was in good hands, I went with “OldCarGuy’s New Toy Shop.”
Reference to the name, “MoneyHole,” Sure beats spending money at bars and fast women!

My wife refers to the shop as her "invisible fench"... She knows I don't stray to far from it when I'm outside... That's what I've been calling it also so I guess it's a keeper.

My wife kinda named mine for me. Came home from work one day and there was a sign on the door that says "Andy's PlayPen" kinda stuck with it.

Since no one has replied to the "Skunk Works" reference, I'll take a stab. "Skunk Works" is the Lockheed (Martin) research and developement program that works in conjunction with the CIA to produce cutting edge reconnaissance aircraft and survelliance systems like the popular spy planes U-2 and SR-71. It's secret aircraft designs and test flights have probably been responsible for most of the UFO sightings in the US. I can'y wait until their mach 5+ sub-orbital pulse-jet is finally revealed! YE-HA!

I must admit, I am not an expert by any means, but I think Skunk Works originated with the group of scientists that developed the first atomic bomb that was dropped on Japan and ended WWII. After that I know the name remained in use, and still is in use. I believe that Luke and Hammerdown got it right. You can find the current application for the name by doing a simple web search. :bounce:

I'm not sure about the atomic bomb part, but the "Skunk Works" has been in business since WWII. They were (are) the "Advanced Projects" department of Lockheed (Martin). They developed Americas first operation jet fighter, the P-80 Shooting Star. Over the years their designs have paved the way for advanced tactical fighters and "stealth" aircraft. They also designed the heat tiles for the shuttle and won the contract for all ground servicing of the shuttle at Kennedy Space Center, beating out primary shuttle contractor Rockwell International. Kelly Johnson (lead designer) is (was) the man. I LOVE the Discovery channel. Most of this knowledge (trivia?) was learned from the Discovery channel program - WINGS.

I retract my statement about the development of the first a bomb, and the words ( Skunk Works) after a little web research, I have found nothing to support this idea, however, I did find a buttload of stuff to agree with your thoughts!

I've got 2 seperate shops and when i can I'll post a couple pics one is 12x20 and has a wood floor just got wiring for lights this is Pe'pe's playroom thats french for grandpa the second is just a dirt basement right now under a barn so I've been calling it the CAVE.Joined here to get ideas for building both into decent work shops. the smaller will be simply converted into a detached den for my stuff like books, model building etc.the cave hopefully will be a full on workshop starting with an empty shell.I'll be looking for advice right from the beginning because this shop will need to serve me for the rest of my time.

I call my shop the "SPA". As in "She's Pizzed Again". Either because I'm always out there and she's pizzed or that's where I go when she's pizzed.

My wife calls it "The Boy's Club". She always knocks before entering then yells "girls in the boy's club!" on her way in. So it kinda stuck, its the boy's club.
