Has anyone used one of these Big Maxx heaters from Mr. Heater? I was looking at installing the 45K BTU natural gas unit in my 2 car garage (~500sqft) for heat in Seattle. I have found them for $369 online.

Scott, I have their 75,000 BTU model. Got it from Northern tool. Their made by Enerco and have been around forever. They have the same specs. and features as the Modine Hotdawg and are basically identicle when set side by side however they run about $100 less than the comparable Modine heater. I love mine and highly recommend them.

Great, thanks for the reply. I was going to order it from Northern as well. Did you tap into your gas line yourself, or have it professionally installed? If so what did they charge you to hook it up? I have no problem mounting it, tapping into my gas line is another story.

My garage is 200' from my house and I would have to punch a line under the driveway so instead of tapping into my NG, I went the propane route and lease a 120 gal. tank.

Did you buy their vent kit? Is there anything special about it? I only have about 2ft to travel to the outside wall. I would hate to pay $80 for a piece of pipe I have to hack up, when I can get it at Home Depot for $10.

Home Depot is the way to go. That way, you only buy the parts you need.

Sounds good, I think I'm ordering the 75K BTU from Northern Tool this week. It's on sale for $429. Called the propane folks today and checked about a 125 gal tank. This is going to be sweeeeet!

Scott,
Thanks for the heads up. I paid $429.99 3 weeks ago. I called them up and they're going to credit my card $30. I owe you a brewski.

fireman- how often do you need to fill the 125 tank?
My only other concern is parts, hope they are readily available for the Mr.heat.

John,
I figure I'll use about 1 tank a year. I figure my 75K BTU will run for 1hr.&10 mins. on a gallon of propane (1 gal. =91,500 BTU). A 120 will hold 96 gallons due to a 20% vapor space. That's 115 hours on a tank. It doesn't take long to heat my shop and very little to keep it warm.
As far as parts availability, Enerco has been around forever and parts are available directly from them. Their heaters have a very good warranty.
