I would definitely have less.I would definitely pay to have my vehicles and house worked on and spend my time maxing and relaxing on a cruise ship,or vacationing and spending time with family. So my vote goes to DEFINITELY less

Would the entire Snap-On catalog along with a 100' x 60' finished garage count as more......

Good grief, I'd have rows of shiny rolling cabs full of cool stuff, and a couple of lifts so I could actually work on my stuff, without crawling around underneath. I had thought about this recently...if I had a huge windfall, who would I call? My attorney, my wife and the tool trucks...and my gun store, I'd buy every 1911 he had.

more cars, more tools, more cars, more tools it's a vicious circle, Summit or Jegs catalog or Snap-on catalog, if I were rich my personal garage would be 10 times the size of my house, how about a couple of Snap-on's Mr, Big roll cabs too. A.A.

Definitely more in facilities like a lift, building size, number of vehicles, etc. I would get by with the hand and individual power tools I have.

I would chose to have much more with a huge shop equipped with a overhead crane, pit, lifts, wash bay etc

Right now I have no garage, so I want a garage equipped at least with a lift and some kind of crane. I'm sure I would have more power tools. I don't think I would want a whole lot more hand tools. While I admire Jay Leno's collection, I don't dream about having tons of vehicles.

MUCH MUCH more.

Mill, separate CNC mill, lathe, bigger drill press, table saw, spindle sander, vacuum system, air filtration, chemical fume hood, distilled water/deionizer setup, large compressor, more elaborate tool storage setup, Lista cabinet setup, and I would have one or two machinists on hand to instruct me in the use of my large machines, and to assist in fabricating complex pieces until my skill develops.

Rich, depends on your definition and how the money is tied up.
But if I was rich as in access to millions in cash (not tied up in property or stocks, etc), then more (as in a USABLE garage, with bigger boxes, a bit more tools, but a lift, etc). Then I could have parts of my vehicles built, and work on the parts that I want to (get them done quicker).

I would most likely buy out a deceased friends house, tear at least part of it down and redo. Right now it is setup for five cars (four in garages and a carport), but with a redesign, could be setup for as many as 8 and have a good size workshop.
Or I might buy out the house next door (shared driveway) and rip the SOB down.

bigger garage with stuff like a lift and gantry. Some more hand tools, but not that many.
The main difference is I would buy brand new parts for my car, rather than hunting through ebay or junk yards for parts.

Very likely more. I'd much rather be out in the shop than on a cruise ship any day. I often get the comment about "working too hard" - meaning I'm out in the shop, gardening, or something like that rather than sitting around in front of the TV or whatever the other person considers to be a "relaxing" pastime. Sorry, but shop time is my "relaxing pastime" and most of their "inactivities" would drive me bonkers... :lol_hitti

Think "Jay Leno"! He has every tool he could want, works on his own stuff, AND has a full-time crew of guys to work on it all too. That'd be me.

I'd make a great rich guy.

Cars built for vintage racing (gassers, road race, etc.), couple vintage daily drivers that actually do everything they're supposed to (like run and stop!), Bridgeport, lathe, Tig welder, a full line of fabrication tools, and one big ass garage! And if I was particularly rich, I'd have someone in there working full-time, so I could cut out and go fishing and hunting when I want.

So for me, it's more tools. If I win the lottery, it's LOTS more tools, and my own personal Shop Gnome.

BIG garage, full shop, full machine shop and fab, and I do kind of hanker for my own track with a 1/4 mile drag section that doubles as a landing strip. How hard would be to train half a dozen hooters girls to be mechanics?

Unfortunately, the issue isn't their ability to learn (although there are a few I've met where that could be the issue) but with your ability to stay focused long enough to teach them... :lol_hitti

Her: And how do you change the oil?
You: Well you just bend over here to look at... Ummm... Ahh.... Well...
Her: Yes? And then what do you do?
You: Well, to properly change a tire you... Ummm...
Her: Tire? Weren't we discussing changing the oil?
You: Right! Yes. Well you... Ummm... Ahhh... Yes...

Oh this is easy. So the question is:

If you were rich, would you have less, more or the same amount of tools as you do now?

Elroy would actually have the "ultimate" tools. Commonly referred to as "employees". Preferably MULITIPLE employees

You know the ones: They show up for work and have a brain and they do what you tell them. It's the "ultimate" tool.

Now the question becomes: Import or domestic ???

That's a tough one there. Maybe a nice mix of both. You know you got to have the right tool for the job at hand.

But then again Elroy always prefers Domestic tools.:pimpflash

Modest 50x100' shop, paint booth, four lifts, overhead crane, stainless steel work benches, huge Snap-On roll cab etc. etc. etc. Completely sound proofed so nothing can be heard outside, and a ridiculous stereo system to take full advantage of that. A constant feed of 150 PSI with no pressure drop or indication of where the air is coming from (underground compressors maintained by an extensive fleet of illegal immigrants, perhaps).

Inside I would have;

1986 Yamaha RZ350R
DTM-Spec BMW E30 M3
2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG
Original Mini w/Suzuki Hayabusa engine
1983 Cadillac Coupe Deville on Daytons
2006 Dodge Ram 3500 5.9L CTD with stacks
MKIII VW Vento (VR6) imported from Germany
...and maybe one of those new Challengers, they are badass.

And a really, really, really hot wife... who is a mute.

I'm not too hard to please... :spit:

Yea, nuthin but the best, as someone else posted something on the order of OCG's shop would do nicely. Just because a guy is well off doesn't mean he gives up relaxing hobbys like playing with lathes and mills and workin on cars or the like.

What does a Snap-On franchise cost? I'd be interesting to do a break-even analysis on this venture, IE what volume of tools would you have to buying for yourself to make it worth buying the whole franchise... I bet it is lower than one would imagine, provided of course, you have the capital to buy the franchise in the first place. I suppose you would also have to factor in the fact that you could hire some guy to drive the truck around and hopefully sell some tools to make a little bit of a profit (though judging from people's experience on this board there is not much to be made right now).

I would have more tools. With that said, my daily drivers would all be new and I would pay someone to maintain them. I would open my own personal garage for restoration work and hire a couple of guys to restore old cars for me under my direction. They would have to be the TOP guys and I would compensate them as such.

Somehow, that sentiment does not appeal to me in the least. To each his own, but I'd rather deal with working on my vehicles than with with car salesmen. :lol_hitti

Also, the depreciation on doing that would quickly make you less than a rich man... If you've ever read The Millionaire Next Door the real rich guys are the ones driving the beat up fifteen year old car...

I don't work on cars because I have to. I work on cars because I want to. I can afford to pay someone if I want to or don't have the time to do it, but the satisfaction of doing something myself is why I do it. Lots more here along with a new garage with heated floors, new york can get real cold sometimes. I guess while I am dreaming how about most of the cabelas catalog and many more guns, knives and more cars to the fleet. I also would need someone to cleanup behind me and keep things in order.

LYAEC 350, You pose some very good points. In this "Pie in the sky" dream of being rich. There are so many varied possibilities one can not comprehend. Such as "Rich" How much is rich? To some it's a healthy family, with a roof over their head and food on the table. Others it may be "Bill Gates" rich. To others it's somewhere in between.
Rethinking my statement, I think it would make better sense to wine and dine my new Snap-On friend and tell him "when business is slow drop by and I'll buy a couple of K in tools for close to cost."

Nealcrenshaw
10-22-2008, 12:28 PM
Good point,Exactly what is "Rich"?To me it's at least 1 million dollars, anything less is well off anything more makes you really rich.Of course this is being financially rich, you can be physically, emotionally, spiritually rich as well.

You can have your Health,Family and friends and have only $.50 in your pocket and still be rich, just not financially though!!

I consider myself rich, not financially but im healthy, have family that cares about me, its all that matters.
Sure material goods are fun and all, but i could live without them. If i enough money in the bank, i'd just travel the world and scuba dive.

So, i probably wouldn't need any tools ;)

Im considering selling all my tools and traveling through Europe for half of the year next year. I figured i'd fly over in June once classes end, stay in Germany until Oktoberfest, and then spend some time with family until xmas.

Man I cannot imagine what the heck I would do for fun if I couldn't wander out to my shop and mess around, I mean even if I just go out there and kick the radio on and sweep the floor or do some other cleaning chore that is just my space to be at peace. Nothing compares with working on something, or playing with the lathe or the like to me. Nope, not travel to exotic lands or anything of the like. I would not trade my shop space for anything except another shop that is bigger better and more well equipped. Just as well shoot me and dump me in a hole when I cannot get to the shop anymore. I will be done. I hope that day never comes.
