Vaccum for grinder output

all -- I've seen dustcollectors that our woodworking brothers use to catch the output of their tools (table saws, routers, and the like)

I have a bench grinder and a belt grinder (think a belt sander on steroids) -- I'd love to be able to have a vacuum powered colelctor to snatch up at least MOST of the spooge that comes off of them . . . . . . clearing, sucking hot metal shards into a shop vac of similar would only cut down on the heating bills once the fire got going well . . . .

I can't be the only guy with this question, but a cursory search revealed nothing . . . . .

any suggestions would be gratefully received

Locate a steel, 20 gallon can with a lid. Plumb the infeeds into it and run a single hose out to your vac.

Pop a brew - you're done.

a five gallon bucket with an airtight snap lid will do as well. I'd avoid water because it will collect all that goo and start to mold -- unless you're fastidious in cleaning it out, the oder becomes quickly offensive

The taller/larger the can, the better the drop-out. I suggest putting all of the connections on the lid to make the can easier to manage and dump.

I would also look into using metal hose (dryer vent) for the take-offs from the grinders - for obvious reasons.

Unfortunately I find a lot of my grinder dust goes straight down and not out the dust outlets to the rear of my bench grinder. The little dust bags they had on the outlets of the dust collectors are long gone.

The bucket or similar container is good. Make the inlet side go in farther than the outlet fitting.

That steel bendable tubing used for exhaust systems can also be used. It is a bit pricey tho. The small 3" stack vent tubing for water heaters is fairly economical.

A guy I have grinding for me was telling me about this "bag" that slips over the end of the vice and works pretty well. He used it when he was grinding in aerospace. Don't know anything else about it, but we need eventually to get something - some sort of good ventilation system to take care of all the grinding dust.
