Going out to check out this box tommorow and looking for opinions about it.
Box is said to be paid off to the dealer and is about 6 months old. $2500.00 is the price. It is a 4 s seris 4225r bottom with the matching top and two side lockers.

The price is good for that much box and I am under the opinion that Matco makes damn good boxes, for some reason in the pic it looks as though the box has had a Dupont overhaul.

The color is silver vein. If I buy it I will pick it up with a open style trailer with a tailgate. Has anybody ever assembled one of these? Just wondering whats envolved in taking the lockers off?

i'd winch it on the trailer as one piece

I thought about winching it on the trailer but think the locker toward the back will hit the ground.

That price is cheap. I'd definately question if it's paid off. PM me the serial #'s off the back of all 4 units & I'll try & verify that they are paid off.
FYI if not & you take possesion Matco can come & get them from you.

I'd be nervous as hell about that...it's too cheap. Big SOB though, wouldn't mind having it in my garage.

The 4s is their economy line. The reduction in price is due to having fewer drawers I would think. Krusty has a 6s I believe.

Good advice...that's what I was thinking!
Last thing you want to do is buy it then find out you owe another 3 grand on it or something.

I'm with Dave.. take his offer and get the serials checked. Thats almost a steal at that price.. and very well might be.

am I the only one thats thinking just grind the serial numbers off?
Yeah dodgy i know, immoral? maybe? But I'd sleep fine, doing the right thing gets you nowhere as I have learned many times to my cost.

There is a hidden set. Besides, if it's not legit, & the seller goes to court & admits who he sold it to, then 1 of our board members is screwed. The idea of this forum is to help members, not IMHO give them advice that could get them in trouble or cost them money.

Retail on the 4series bottom, top, & 2 side cabinets is $10,178.
I'll say it again, that price seems too low!

pay in cash say your names Merkava
fair enough if it goes like that then yeah its an issue. Here if it was sold on then it wouldn't be a problem as possession is the be all and end all. They would have to prove he bought stolen goods.

We had to dissasemble the quad bay I sold, and used a forklift to lift the end cab up off the lip. There were 4 screws that lined up with the black plugs on the outside, that you can access from the inside. The hutch was a mother to take apart, if you need to. Hope that you don't.
Very good price! I'd be nervous, but simply cannot believe that Matco can come and get it from you. Seems it is hard enough for a dealer to repo from an existing customer! Get a receipt, don't give him your last name, and hope you never need parts for it. Although, if you do, Matco will warranty the slides for free.

Here's a senerio.
The original buyer baught it on credit. Matco uses a "secured debt loan". This means that the items financed are like a security bond. Until the loan is paid off it's legally not the techs. Even bankruptcy will not allow him to keep it & not pay.
I've heard of a tech that traded in a box that was not paid off. The finance company took the tech to court. He revealed whom he traded it in to. They then went to the distributor that had sold the box a long time ago. He had a choice, pay the balance or let them know where the box was because they were going to get it. At the time I worked at the shop there the other tech bought the used box. The distributor had to take the original tech to small claims court to try & get money.
It's just like a car or a house. If the bank still owns it, it's not his to sell. "Bill of sale" or not.
Maybe we're all jumping the gun & the box is free & clear. I'm just trying to make sure the original poster is protected.

I've always bought my boxes off the truck, used. I figure if the MATCO dealer took a MATCO box in trade, he would surely know if there was a lien against it, because he sold it to the guy in the first place.

Its sad it could turn into such a dirty scenario... but with that much at stake I'd at least get it double checked. You could end up out $2500 and a toolbox... not super likely.. but piece of mind is worth alot.

Make long ramps for your trailer. I did that and we were able to easily load and unload a large 3 bay Snap on tool box.

I appreciate all the comments and advice from you guys. I got the numbers today and called matco service line and was forwarded to the finance department who looked the numbers up and I was told they where not in the system which means its paid off. I just got back and will unloaded it in the morning. The box is very nice just have to see if I can get some more drawers for the lockers.

Glad you got it. If the #'s weren't in the system it means they never financed it. Either the customer paid cash or it was financed off of the truck.

Congrats on a great deal and a great box. You did the right thing by checking first. In California it is a crime to merely possess an item that was originaly serialized and now has the number missing. Buying an item at an amazing deal without making sufficient inquiry can get you convicted for recieving stolen property.

I always recommend a tow truck. Pay full price, don't ask him to do it after hours for less $$$. I recommend this because if they damage it it's insured.

When we've had techs leave for other dealerships (rare in our shop actually) most of them have been able to get the new dealer to pay for moving their box. Shouldn't be hard to negotiate if they want you over there. $100 tow truck ride is nothing to most service depts.
