recessed fluorescent lights with 16" spacing?

Is there such a thing? I can't afford to lose the clearance by installing standard 4' dual bulb fixtures.

I've got 12" recessed in the drop ceiling here at work overhead right now. Can't say that I've seen a 16" though? Looks like most of the cooper/metalux line sizes from
12",20" & 24".

Just mount the light between the ceiling joists. They dont get hot flurecent bulbs. Then drywall up to them trim with strips of oak whatever?? there you go.

Flourescent bulbs don't get hot, but ballasts do. Make sure you leave some airspace between the fixture and the wall/ceiling. There have been many threads regarding screwing the chain-hung flourescent fixtures directly to the ceiling. Consensus is that there should be at least a little space between the fixture and the ceiling.

In this case, I think you are ok hanging them in the ceiling joist bays. (just maintain a little air space)
