View Full Version : Thinking of buying a used SO Classic 78 box

My dealer has a SO Classic 78 Box. Black with rubber top. Stainless handles. No dents and barely a scratch. Really nice condition. He'll take $2000 for it and I can set up any payment type of plan I want. I told him I could maybe pay him $500-$1000 up front and then maybe $250 a month or something.

I was thinking of using it at home. But it'd probably be just an expensive decoration in some respects. It'd get some use, but not nearly as much as if I used it at work. I think we need a bigger box at work, but finances are another story, even though I've argued that if we had the right tool organization, we'd find tools faster and keep track of them better.

Anyway, I guess I could find the Classic 78 cheaper (I've seen them on CL for $1800 and could maybe bargain down to $1500, I don't know...).

I was kind of ready to get a Sears box, but this thing popped up and has been on the truck for over a month. Guys keep flaking on the driver, and he hasn't sold it and has another he wants to put on. He said take it and pay on any schedule you want. No interest.

Anyone have the Classic 78 box?

I have one and it is a damn good box, I have been 100% pleased with my KRA2411.
You should be able to find one for under $2000 no problem I bought mine new from SO while I was in college for $1500 so there should be quite a few bought by votec students in that price range. .

Heres a Pic.

I notice the label says "Assembled in the USA." Anyone know where the sheet metal and other parts are crafted? Canada? China? Elsewhere?

Just for comparisons sake, you can get a Kennedy Benchmark box for $1685.00 -

I dunno about the metal... IIRC alot of S/O's boxes were Canadian origin?

Also $2K is a decent price.. if you have the cash to buy it out right though see if he'll cut you a better deal or search craigslist, etc. I've seen a few of those for $1500-1600ish on my local craigslist.

Are you feeling okay? What have you done with the real Merkava, damn imposters. Seriously though, you like the Kennedy boxes? I have a small benchtop Kennedy box that I keep my machinist tools in, high quality box IMHO but I have never compared it to a SO box. Everytime I work in one of the auto dealerships I want to take a close look at the techs SO boxes but I figure they'd think I was some kind of a freak for asking to touch their drawers. :wtf:

Nope... most of those guys really like their tools and would welcome the opportunity to talk about their stuff. If you see a tech who ain't too busy, ask him about his stuff.

Some are... well ok most are. Some are just more talkative about it. There is one tech that everytime I walk past him we seem to have some communication about a tool or something. Kinda funny.

Well... from a tech's point of view, I could understand wanting to talk to with earnest about something that a) you've invested a lot in b) is shiny, yet manly and c) commands respect from just about anything with testicles.

I did have a few ask about my Knipex screwdrivers, they expect to see an electrician with Klein screwdrivers, they notice anything that's not a black handle.

Off topic, I was sent to a Ford dealership last year right after a fire was put out, I mean soon as it was out, the place was still smoldering and the FD was still there. I had to disconnect the electric that fed the shop where the fire was so they could get the rest of the dealership back up. I seriously never saw that many men with tears in their eyes, those guys lost a lot of boxes and tools.

The fire was put out quick but judging by the warped steel all over the place, every tool they had was now garbage. Last I heard (we did the rebuild) the a55hole insurance company was not willing to pay for tools not destroyed, they don't consider exposure to heat that ruins the hardness of the metal destroyed.

$2500 was the asking price. I said would you consider $2000 and I'd give you a large or at least decent deposit.

If I don't get it, and it doesn't get sold in the meantime, I'll mention to him that there's a guy in SF who wants it. Assuming you can arrange transport up the coast from Los Angeles.

I have one and love it, keep in mind i paid alot so my opinion may be biased :bounce: Honestly I do think its a hell of allot better than my co workers craftsman pro box, my only complaint is the finish durability, its very scratch RESISTANT but I wish it was closer to bullet proof for the $ I paid.
I got a used nylon cover for $50 i think they retail for ~$150, but its worth it IMO most shop cleaning crews arent very carefull and i like to keep my stuff shiney

I think you should bide your time and get a pre-owned KRL761 or KRL722 for around $2000.

I think you're right. I didn't have the heart to try to beat down the guy on price another $500, but if the thing sits there for another month or two, I might.:)

I paid $2000 for a 1 month old KRA2411 and recently I bought a used KRL761 for $1600. Both are good boxes. I don't think the KRL box is that much better than the KRA box. If the KRA2411 box is in excellent condition I think $2000 is a very good price.

I bought the 78, in black. Rubber top. Stainless steel additions to it. Mint condition. $2000. Will be delivered later in this week or next.

But now, I just found out about a big red thing for $1000. I'm going to check it out tomorrow!

Somebody said that the moment you buy the one you think is the best deal, you find another! So, maybe I'll convince the people with the purse strings at the shop to take one for the shop and I'll keep one.

I'm pretty sure that one in the picture is a KRL663. Those are nice boxes. Not quite as deep as a KRL1003.

EDIT!!

I re-read your post. The KRL663 is twice the box for half the money of the Classic 78. ;)

I sort of thought that....:(

What's the nearest current equivalent in the S-O lineup?

Vinko, If you don't want that red one let me know-I'll take it if in decent shape. A finders fee would be acceptable to me. Let us know what you decide.

^^^^a-okay.

Merkava: I meant the current equiv. to KRL 663 (if that is indeed what the box is). I don't see the model in the current on-line catalog and my paper catalog is at work. Is the KRL663 a discontinued model?

i just bought mine brand spanking new feb 12th. Midnight blue KRA2411PDG. i paid 3911 for mine, after financing its a bit more than that, but interest kills.
so far im more than pleased with it. perfect size for someone up and coming in this industry, especially since there are options for it. top chest, hutch, side cabs. snap on also holds its value for trade in if you keep up on it.
i can say that my snap on dealer went above and beyond what anybody else would do to help me get into more room. Before the roll cab i had a matco roll cart MSC4.
this is my tool storage at work, at home i have a cheapo box, doesnt have much in it anyways.

Congrats.
I've been pleased with mine. So far, I haven't found any drawbacks to it. 'Cept I'd like a bit more room :)
