A new import will not hold up nearly as well as that old vise, just make sure it's not totally trashed (not much can go wrong with a vise) sandblast it, paint it, your great grandchildren will still be using it.

Columbian is one of the better - Made in USA - benchvises. Also it's a machinists vice as opposed to a mechanics vise - also good. Great candidate for a restoration! If you have room, the steel bench looks pretty neat too. If it were me, I'd flash 'em a crisp $50 with the old 'it's all I got'! He'll probably take it. If not, pull out the other $10. It's a good deal!

I agree, I would do as Evintho suggests. $60 is still a deal.
Evintho, did you ever pick up that vise from Wright road? I was driving down that stretch yesterday to borrow a Snap On 3/4" impact gun and I was wondering about your field retrieval.

I would go for the used vice, sandblast it and repaint. Short of a nuclear bomb, nothing is going to harm that old vice.

Naw, the best I could do was leave a note in the mailbox. If I don't' hear anything by Christmas I'm gonna go knock on the neighbors door again and see if he's heard from the owner. I'm gonna keep trying though!

Alright. Sounds like a plan. Holler if you need a hand to drag it out of the field with you. I am over there on Wright once in a while helping an old buddy of mine from back in the day when we worked at Penngrove together.

I had just spent about 4 hours cleaning it up and painting it last weekend. I lubricated it all was good. the handle felt good but was still hard to turn, so i lubricated that with synthetic motor oil then it worked like a new one. My son was in the garage screwing around with it already closed and push down on the handle and it broke the back of the vice off where the threaded bar pulls it closed just snapped the ear off. It was a cast piece, the fracture looked half old and half new. probably being all gummed up i was unable to exert enough force to finish it off, but clean and well lubricated a 12 year old did.

It can be done, I once cracked a heavy machinists vise into two pieces, I was less than pleased. It was a quality vise, proving you can destroy even quality tools if you abuse them enough!

Skip the import, buy that old timer, it is a great deal. If you need a swivel base just keep looking, it may take a bit but sooner or later you will find another for good money like the one you pictured. But for now hurry up and buy that one before it gets away from you.

stroked93 could you just have the piece that broke off welded back in place?

Real damned good welders can weld a vise back together so that it is ALMOST as good as it was before you broke it, but if you are like me you will never push a welded vise quite as hard as you did before you broke it again.

I keep forgetting that I am spoiled by having a great local welder. The welder about 10 miles from me can weld anything. He does radiator repair, aluminum, magnesium, Cast iron, and steel.
