I don't have a pic yet, but maybe I can describe what I own. It's an older snap-on ratchet (maybe 60's or so, possibly 70's). It is shaped like this:

but there is one difference. Mine has a button in the center that when pressed, releases the detent and allows a socket to fall off the other side. Otherwise, they look nearly identical. I've looked for a p/n and don't recall finding any. Sound familiar to anyone?

Quick release model Should have a F 7xx or 8xx in the area where it says Snap on where the handle meets the shaft between the two grooves.

Cool, I'll check again tonight. After a quick search of da'bay, found several that were F723 that look identical. Now to just find more to buy......so far, that's been my favorite ratchet I've ever had (handed down through 3 generations of master mechanics). Are there any other popular quick release ratchets that are as good / better? Not looking for the cheap china crap.....

Mine is a F713 I think I've seen 8xx series QD's as well.
To the OP the symbol between the on and off in the selector area is the date code. The chart below will tell you what year it was made.

f713????????

and we HAVE A WINNER!!!!

Turns out it is indeed an F-713. Now the next question.....does anyone have a breakdown of the differences between each model number? IE, what is different from the 713 to the 723, to the 823, etc.?

I'm thinking it might be drive size, oh wait!! I already mentioned that.

I checked and the date code has been ground smooth, so unless I can use the patent number (doubt it), or unless there is another code hidden inside the housing, I won't know what year it was mf'd. Ah well, at least now I know what model it is :)

THanks!

I saw that, and thought about it, but what you posted didn't seem to match up to what I have (which is why I asked again) :)

Mine is stamped with F-713 which is a 3/8" quick release, and also there isn't an "a" after the 713 number

F=3/8 S=1/2 T=1/4......

the F indicates drive size. the f713 would be a quick release version of the f710. the f723 a quick release version of the f720, etc. the A just mean's that it is a later revision, posibly number of teeth or more likely in the f723 meaning it has the newer style logo.

ok, so F713 means it's a 7-series with 13 teeth? odd.

edit: ok, thanks for the letter break down. The 3 at the end means quick-release version then, and if it is a 713, then that is a quick release version of the 710, which would mean 10-teeth, correct?

My F710 is a D series

no....it's a 20 tooth. early ratchets were pn 71 then 71-10 then f710 or s710. it's hard to follow the logic but you'll catch on :spit:

Nice ;)

so the new ones, they actually have 80-tooth versions? Unless I read wrong in the other thread, that would be a LOT of difference.....and those are the ones with screws underneath, versus on the back face?

and to think I've been messing with 20-tooth versions.....never knew what I was missing :)

Guess I'll need to start putting away for those as well as a used Matco box for the garage.....

I've bought the older Snap On ratchets and have been using them for awhile and I just recently got an F80 and LOVE IT! It's almost like there is no gears, it is not very pronounced. You'll be shocked, I know I was

As for the F80, I'm already searching for used ones ;)
