Mac has two different versions of Knurled extensions. One style has the knurling in two places. At the top around the female square drive (the handiest spot), and further down on the shaft. This type of extension is US made. Mac also sells another style of knurled extensions with the knurling only on the extension shaft. These extensions are imported from Taiwan. As with all tools if it doesn't say USA on the tool, it's not made here.

I wish all my extensions were knurled. It just makes using them so much easier when you are oily as all get out, sweatin like a pig and trying to finish a job.

I've been getting some of the knurled Snap-On extensions (1/4", 3/8") in my used tool deals at the flea/pawn shop; I really am finding them useful in my work on cars lately! I really recommend them; it is nice when your hands are oily, greasy and your in a tight spot under or over a car and need to turn a fastener with your extension! I have never had any up until this point; for some reason they have been showing up used and I recommend you get some asap! You'll be glad you did! :)

Makes it a lot easier to get them off of the Snap on pry off ratchets. Lot easier then the pocket screwdriver or mini pry bar.

I have a 7? piece Mac set in a tray with 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 and they have the knurlings in two places. They are the best I have used because of that. Think I got them one month they were on sale for around 100 bucks. Still spendy but they are nice

Proto makes 'em too. I didn't realize I needed them until I bought my first one.

Gearwrench ones are made in CHINA.

Merkava_4

They're probably actually from Taiwan, but they have no origin directly on the tool. :)

After changing a bad oil pump on a greasy Land Rover today and reading this thread last night.. I bought myself a set of SO extensions with the knurling. I was getting tired of dealing with a small amount of grease on extentions and not being able to turn them

It would depend on when they were made as the bulk of Gearwrench tools are now made in the PRC (People's Republic of China).:(

I know they`re not US made, but when I think of knurled tools I think of the deep knurling on my Koken extensions.. which seems to be patented? The light patterning on the extensions further up the thread doesnt do much for me.

Nikolai_V,

Where can Koken tools be purchased from?

Cornwell and SO are probably the best, but for USA and price, I have a link to a good SK set, very good price. Remember, having extensions up to 30 inches in all drive sizes is helpful. Sometimes the best way to a tough fastener, is from a distance with a swivel socket. Here is the SK link.

You could try Stahlwille USA or we have a good company on www.uktools.co.uk he carries a large range of Ko-ken.
If a tool carries the letters USA it doesnt mean made in USA does it....... it could stand for United States of Asia!!! beware..

The knurled extensions are nice, but the ones with a handle are even better especially when your hands are real greasy ..

A couple of pretty nice ideals there. I really like the ko-ken design tho. I can see a lot of places I could have really used that.

Those Macs would have came in handy a few times as well.

Sigh too many tools. Not enough money.

I have the S-K knurled extensions and they are very good. S-K also makes a knurled spark plug socket which is very handy.

I have a set of the VIM locking extensions with handles in both 1/4" and 3/8" drive. I use them constantly now. They work great.

I have the VIM set also. They are easier to clean than the soft MAC handles ..

My 1/4" VIM set is a newer style that are very similar to the MACs. The locking collar is a bit easier to grip compared to the ones on the hard handles. I have not seen any of the new style with the VIM brand on it except in 1/4" drive. I suspect they will come out after they sell off more old stock in the hard handle style.
