While surfing Ebay today, I came across an extra long 1/2 drive flex head ratchet. I guessed that this ratchet was imported when I saw it in Mac flyers before but, I was surprised to see in the photos in this Ebay listing the the word China is actually stamped into the ratchet cover plate. I have mixed feelings about this. First, it sucks that Mac would sell this Chinese ratchet for over $100 off of the truck. However, I am happy that at least Mac put the country of origin on a tool for once. To me it's an overpriced rebadge of a Titan ratchet. I wouldn't buy it for $50 let alone $100 plus but, at least who ever buys it knows where it's from and can't be told different by the dealer.

I have their Micro-Tough ratchets. Not bad for being made over seas. They are great for light work. Only thing is, once and a great while the reverse lever sticks.

As far as I'm concerned, that ratchet is not a MAC ratchet; not even remotely so.

[COLOR="Blue"]These are MAC ratchets here:

So basically you're saying a Mac ratchet is US made, probably somewhere in Ohio, and may resemble its Stanley or Proto relatives but, is different, maybe even special? I get it. As I've said before, unless you see those three little letters USA on the tool, it's not made here. It's interesting to note that this is the only Mac ratchet I've seen with China on it. Mac has the Facom clones and their newer 45 tooth series of ratchets that have no country of origin on the tool itself. The XRP9 box does have Made in Taiwan printed on one side in small letters though.

Real MAC ratchets have a character all their own; they're special to me yes. ;)

Yes. Anyone who's been one this board for more than 15 minutes should know that MAC are simple rebadged Protos. Which, in my opinion, is actually a GOOD thing.

No, they don't. THERE ARE NO "REAL" MAC RATCHETS.

You need to internalize this. :headshake

MAC tools are rebadged tools from Stanley, Proto, and others. Seriously...

in fact there are very few MAC tools left. MOST of MAC's tools have come from other vendors since the begining.

Y'all can say what you want, but the XR8PA sitting in my toolbox drawer drenched in the luscious red Permatex, is the real deal. :D

Oh, shit! That is the same as that MAC floppy head POS ratchet that I had - an XR11F or whatever. WHAT A TURD that was! I sold it to a guy for $20. The Snap On 80s that my wife got me for Christmas are so far beyond that MAC ratchet... it isn't even funny.

You can keep your "real" deal. When you actually use your ratchets... you'll see what I mean.

in the first few years of stanleys ownership vendors like national hand tool (one of the companies who made MAC's tools) were purchased and it made it seem that mac was actually manufacturing their own tools. but stanley could never keep MAC from hemmoraging cash. if fact it's been a common problem for MAC over the years to try and stay solvent ( which was the reason mac allied tool co= MATCO) split from them in 79. i'm going to predict MAC will not be with us in their present state much longer. i have heard this from a source i can't reveal.

You're right Fedwrench, it looks like a Titan, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if the price was right. I can't believe they can sell that thing for so much money and keep a straight face. Unbelievable......

I wouldn't pay 50 cents for that ratchet. Prime example of what ticks me off about truck tool companies, re-labeling an Asian tool, and charging top dollar for a Harbor Freight type tool. Hey MAC tools, here is your fruit basket.:moon:

No shit??? What are you using instead??? Snap On 80s?

Those ratchets, while pretty, irritate the shit out of me under actual use. Merkava might understand if he used his for any extended period of time.

Seriously, I hope you sell those bad boys for a mint!!!!!

Snap on 936 in place of the short red one, and a snap on 80 11" flex in place of the long MAC. If these ratchets had at least 60 teeth or so, they would be my favorite. But I tried and tried to use them even with permatex, and the feel just isnt there. I have to say though, they look better and the handle feels better than any other ratchet Ive used, but the teeth sucks. I would have kept them cause I have way more in them than I will get on Ebay, but I hate having tools taking up space that I will NEVER use. Plus I want a swivel head 1/4" SO to go with my 3/8

Chinese tool companies just offer off the shelf tools and they'll put a name on it... That wrench doesn't cost more then 1$ at the quantity that MAC would buy from the supplier. Sadly though it also looks really cheap..

An importer of Chinese made goods is a customer of mine. He sells decent quality oil filters to us for around 50cents each, considering a Fram our cost is around 2.50$.. I don't think the quality is any worse then a Fram but it's not as good as a Purolator or Wix. The same guy was trying to unload a large quantity of tools on me, something along the lines of 5k. 5K buys a van full of Chinese tools that you can resell at high mark ups.

Example.

A set of 8-19mm impact sockets my cost was 6.50$.. No name, I just needed to add my own label. If he selling them to me at 6.50 he must be buying them for around 3$ a set.. Another example are decent wrench sets under the name "Hardline" my cost is 10$ a set, 8mm-24mm.

It's something I am considering selling.

Can you blame Stanley though? They are making a huge profit off a simple ratchet. However selling a lower quality product at a premium price is wrong. I guess this is why there is only 1 MAC dealer in the area.
