Quick Question

I am in the market for a 1/2" impact gun. We have the IR thunderguns at work and they seem pretty nice. I don't know much about the other models. I have found these guns for 219-269. I just came across one for $169 and I think its probably a good deal. Anyone have a reason not to buy one? I work on my own stuff mostly but do some side work for friends on and off. So, what do you think? I am also looking at possibly a 2135ti max($219). I know it will be quieter and more powerful, but I didn't really have much problems with my craftsman before it came up missing. I do know the i/r guns have an excellent reputation for durability and that is why I am looking into these. I'm just trying to decide if its worth spending the extra money on a thunder gun or 2135timax , over the 231c ($109).

The IR Thundergun is a decent impact gun, but on the noisy side; since you like the IR stuff, you might consider a IR 2135ti which has a little more performance and alot quieter .. :)

They're too noisey. Once you lose your hearing, it's gone and not coming back. I would recommend a quiet impact such as the IR2135QTIMAX or at least wear hearing protection.

totally agree, one of my techs just got the IR2135QTIMAX and its actually super quiet. it actually sounds like an electric impact. i have a regular 2135 and the difference really is night and day. he got his on the snapon truck and it was only $10 more than the regular 2135.

I personally use a 2135TiMAX, and earplugs. It has removed a Honda crank bolt that no other impact in the shop could. Nitrocat, Thundergun, 2135Qti, 2135Ti, and the matco flavor of the 2135Ti. Had to wail on that damn thing for 15-20 seconds, but it came out. We threw all those others up there for 30-60 seconds before I finally removed it with mine.

The IR 2135s are the lightest, strongest guns out there. If you can find one used in very good shape, jump on it. They do have a tendency to wear out fwd/rev buttons and triggers if they're not oiled FREQUENTLY, so be wary of a well-used gun that looks pretty rough.

Mine gets oiled twice daily. For real. I'm not just saying that because it's the right thing to post.

I love my thundergun titanium if u already know there loud from using them and can get a good deal I don't see any reason not to get one

here's a quick solution for a noisy impact gun - at least for the exhaust:

bicycle innertube. any kind, just pick a size that fits tightly over the pistol grip. Cut it so the whip sticks out a few inches to facilitate plugging/unplugging from the quick-connect (If you don't use a whip, this is as good a time as any to get one).

It will last about a year before the oil eats away at the rubber enough for it to start to decompose/rot/tear.

we use the 2135 s and gotta say they are great when new but do screw up on the buttons a lot............and lose power rather quickly............if doing work at home with neighbours around, quiet is best............ley us know what you decide on and what you think after using it a bit...........also some guys were talking about the smaller snappy 3/ 8" having good balls to it...........something to think about

i have an S-O xt7100 i got on ebay a few months back for 140 shipped (which i really appreciated). but i have used the IR 2135timax and its really awesome & suprisingly light for a 1/2" impact that can crank out 780ft/lbs

2135's, in any shape, simply don't have the longevity of traditional aluminum guns. If your using it for home, it will probably last a long time. The buttons wear out and you'll find that in picking it up and putting it down, they will slide "out of position" and be halfway between forward and reverse and leak out air and have no power. Just inconvenient. Also, the triggers loose their sensitivity after a while.

Let's be realistic here, for the majority of jobs, a 2135 is way overkill. Even the thunder gun is way more power than you need, because I use a beat old 231c at work and rarely need anything more powerful. Maybe once or twice a month when I work full time in the summer do I need more power.

I have a 2135ti for when I really need it. However, I have a clearance Ampro(CH i believe) that I got at advance auto for around 50 bucks, that I use 90% of the time. It's not the nicest. Loud, and heavy. But it does the job, and I don't tear up the IR on everyday little stuff. I bought 2 of the clearanced ones expecting them to wear out fast but I'm still on the first after a year and a half. It may seem l'm trying to talk you out of the 2135 but in fact, the opposite. Awesome gun. I love it. I've had it for 2 years + and never had a problem.

i have a 2135. when i first bought it i used it every day as a lube/tire tech at a ford dealer. now i use it on the weekends at firestone. i wouldn't give it up for anything.
i used a "shop supplied" aluminum ingersol impact and i can't use it for any thength of time. they weigh a ton.
with the adjustible torque setting i don't see the point of having a second "weaker" impact. i keep the torque setting on low and it does anything i ask it to. practice moderation.
i've had a ingersol brand boot on it to protect it since day 1. it still looks like the day i bought it back in ought 5. the only thing i would do different is i would have bought the quiet version. a guy in the bay next to me had a 2135 quiet and all you could hear was the anvil. very nice. speaking of...

is it possible to get the guts out of a 2135 quiet version and install them in the regular 2135??

I also have a 2135Ti and love it! I have a 231C and it does the job most of the time, but I usually grab the 2135 because it's lighter and smaller.

I don't work in a shop, and oil mine every time I use it. Do you guys do anything other than drip some oil into the air inlet? Is greasing them regularly a requirement?

I just put in a few drops of oil prior to using them daily; I did buy the IR grease kit though ..
