Dumb question....

How do you take this thing apart? I don't see anyway to get the head open. :headscrat

The one I'm trying to get open is a TM741

Thanks!

I'm thinking there is a splitring on the drive side that you need to walk off with a pick.

Fedwrench now that you say that and I look at it close I do believe you are correct. Thanks for your help.

jdcompman, if you would.... could you do a ratchet "autopsy" for those of use who haven't torn one down yet? I'm sure everyone here would appreciate the "how to" on a rebuild of one of these ratchets! :)

I second that!

...even though I don't own one. I like looking at naughty pictures with everything laid bare :bounce:

All Laid out and ready to get started.

The unsuspecting patient (TM741)

The top of this picture you can see the very small ridge which is the edge of the ring that secures the head.

Removing the retaining clip. Since this is only a 1/4" drive ratchet I found the razor blade worked best to work the retaining ring off.

Once the clip is off, the head simply pushes out of the ratchet body

Another shot of the reversing mechanism.

Shot of the teeth inside the ratchet body

All taken apart.

Reassembly obviously in reverse order.

Some of the pictures may look kind of greasy because I had already cleaned this ratchet up and put it back together before I saw the request for a tutorial. When I first took this ratchet apart, it was bone dry and filled with rust. It feels as good as new now.

Awesome! Great pics and explanation. Thanks a lot.
I've never seen a retaining ring like that...

Thanks again

Great write up and pictures!! A new thread should be started with the posts and photos from all of the disassembled ratchets at the top of the forum like the tool manufacturers.

I can't believe you used a different lube the Merkava's red permatex.:bowdown::bowdown:

Spiral retaining snap rings in this style are VERY common in transmissions - you'll see them in almost every drum that has a sprag on it. 4L80E, TH400, etc. 4R70W.

That is an awesome idea. With all the ratchets that people on here own, we'd have a database for disassembling just about anything ever made.

Admin, can you please help us with this? There is so much good info that is scattered and buried so deep, its almost useless! Especially, with the native search engine!
