Used box pricing

First post for a newb so be gentle, I searched but it seemed to be too broad to bring up anything great on the subject. I'm looking at a snapon KRA4107 http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=storage&item_ID=72615&group_ID=17774&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog box that a pawnshop has. Their price was 14XX, 'reduced' to 12XX. I didn't ask any questions about it because I'm still shopping around, but it looked straight, just had some scratches here and there, no top ribbed mat or but it had drawer liners. It was unlocked and the box next to it was locked, so I dunno if it happened to be unlocked or they didn't have keys. I got the serial number to call snapon about seeing if it has any money owed on it just to cover my @$$. What would you guys offer on it? Thanks.

First of all, it's not worth half of what they want for it; secondly, 38-13/16" is too short IMO.

I'm working with a 26inch top/bottom craftsman right now and only recently started working as a tech, IMO it's still better than what I'm using right now. I plan on a top for it later as well. I don't have a ton of tools yet, but I've already got enough that this craftsman setup is getting cramped.

There's been guys on this board pick up KRL double bay boxes for as little as $600 - you gotta be patient. $1200 for that little KRA box is ridiculous.

There's a few of this box on craigslist locally that they're asking 2000 for top/bottom, so it wouldn't be out of line to offer 1000 for the set?

I'm working with a 26inch top/bottom craftsman right now and only recently started working as a tech, IMO it's still better than what I'm using right now. I plan on a top for it later as well. I don't have a ton of tools yet, but I've already got enough that this craftsman setup is getting cramped.

Not worth it, I would by a Craftsman Pro, before that box. Look for a KRL series Snap-on box.

It all depends on what you're looking for. For the price of a used Snap on box, you could get a new Craftsman set up that would give you room to grow. I would say not to pay more than 50% of new price out the door for a unit in great shape with keys.

It all depends, on how bad the seller needs money really. The better the shape, the more it is worth, regardless of age. Special editions, bring more money usually.

I've seen a few stainless boxes that were kept in a professional shop environment. Man, they looked aweful. Somehow these things deteriorate more quickly than painted or powder coated models.

The display at the store says its stainless steel with a clearcoat on it, so I'd imagine it would hold up fairly well. Were the ones you saw straight bare ss?

On pricing boxes it REALLY matters where you are.

I buy boxes for 15% of list, that is, Craftsman, Mac, Matco.

Sell boxes after a little TLC, if needed, for 33% of list.

May go 20% for something really nice, may sell for 40% if it is really nice.

But mostly buy at 15 sell at 33.

Snap-on sells beat up for more than that so I usually avoid them.

I only buy ball bearing after having to sell friction no matter how nice, for no more than 15%.
That includes Snap-on, Kennedy, Mac and Matco.

But I live in Southern California close to about 10-30 times the population that most members live near.
Even more people since with the Freeways I don’t mind driving 100 miles for the right deal.

So there are at least 7 million, probably 10 million folks in ‘my area’.

Some small town of a half million may never see these prices.
But towns near the ‘Nascar’ belt, or in areas that are predominantly Anglo may see even better deals on a constant basis.

Different cultures, different settings (urban, suburban, small town and farm country for examples) will see way different boxes and tools for WAY different prices.

You should always check to see or ask where the posters are finding good deals.
North Rust Belt, vs. San Diego ain’t gonna be the same prices.

If your just starting as a tech are you sure now is a good time to sink a lot of cash into a box, ie your biggest tool expense that does nothing to make you money?

If your box is getting crowded, clear out a bit of what you use least.

I checked out the thread and saw the box. Very nice. But don't you think that's a pretty rare exception? I mean, the guy was definitely in the right place at the right time to get that kind of deal. The other guy was retiring, he made him a low offer just joking, and the guy accepted. I've never seen a box like that on CL for less than a grand, if that.

I agree he can get a better deal than the one at the pawnshop...but if he holds out for a deal that good, he may never get one. :shocking:

Don't get caught up in all this elitist toolbox bs that many techs have. A toolbox holds tools. If it holds them, and stands up, that's all that matters. Like I say a million times, the guys at work with the Snap-On boxes usually have the smallest boxes and the least amount of tools. The ones with Craftsman, etc., have the most tools. I'll tell you one more thing, don't short yourself on the size of the box. I've seen so many guys at work end up buying 3 boxes in 5 years. Go big right away, and be done with it.

I wouldn't hesitate to get an International toolbox for work either, they're on ebay.

If you're worried how one of these will hold up, build an angle iron frame to put some nicer wheels on and support the box better.

The problem with the Stainless boxes is most are riveted together. In a busy shop they can wear out quick.

The trap I watched many new techs fall into when I was a MAC dealer was box. Go cheap at first. If you spend big on a box and little on tools you will need to run to senior techs for tools you should own. They will get sick of it fast.

If you buy something inexpensive and take care of it you can recover a lot of your money buy selling it to the next "new guy: in your shop when you move to a bigger box.

Good tools will make you job easier and in turn will help you make more money. Your box just holds them.

Good luck recovering most of your money on a used box when you sell it. It happens, but it's not the norm. Buy a big box at a nice price, and be done with it. Buying one of the ones posted will still leave money and room for plenty of tools.
