The scam as I understand it ....

1) Steal a credit card.
2) Use it to buy gift cards.
3) Sell them quickly.
4) Enjoy the money while the sucker finds out in a few days the card was go good and they have to pay for the items themselves.

A candidate for death by pain, no doubt.

There are several ways the scam works, Danglerb mentions the commonest. Bad check writing gets you lots of these also.

Sad because people do legitimately sell them. I've given them as gifts, traded them with friends, etc.

Lots of people get them from large refunds. I have two in my wallet right now, about 40 and 30 dollars each, waiting till the next time I need to buy something.
So this may be legit, but I sure wouldn't take any odds on it.

Yah , thats just strange. If I am reading it right, he's not trying to sell a gift/merchandise card. I could understand some reason behind that if he was; as I allways have a few in my wallet from returns were the reciepts just dissaper; and I wish I had cash in their place. But he's trying to sell you merchandise purchased off of his own HD credit card at a discounted value to boot. Its just weird. I dont know how hard it is to get a HD credit card, but whats popular to do told by an aquatence of mine who used to work at a scrap yard is; intentially maxing out the card on new copper tubeing and taking it directally to the scrap yard for cash with no intention of paying off the card of course. The HD cards must be easy to get with fake credentials.

3 at 8 Mike is an honest person from Ohio. Didn't Dorothy fly in from Ohio, or maybe it was Kansas.

It is a scam. If the stuff was free I would not go there.

I did send an email to the person just to see if the seller would get back to me.

Question: "Are you the owner of this credit card, meaning that it is in your name, address, and you make payments on it each month?

Got back to me almost immediately.

Answer: "absolutly and will show you ID, I am looking for higher ticket items but will consider less the maximum discount I will give you is 20% and today would be good for me."

Edit: rodm1 found the phone number. Ira S. Kessey in Vacaville. I will bet Mr. Kessey is missing his wallet and cell phone.

Oakland and Vacaville are about an hour apart.

I just sent and email back to the scammer, asking if he was Ira S. Kessey from Vacaville.

This guy is fast.

Email I sent: "Is your name Ira S. Kessey from Vacaville?"

Then I received 2 email responses:

"haha goggled me...Ira is my best friend, did you see the web site with the glass..pretty stuff."

"I'm heading to home depot off high street in oakland right now to pick up a couple of things i need, any chance your serious about needing anything there?
Ted."

Per the website Ira did start out in Oakland, now lives in Turlock. On the contact site there is also a Ted listed.

But I can also claim to be jesus on the internet.

Why not e-mail Ira and see if he is missing stuff? If he really did have his items stolen, he might appreciate the info.

I figure some are legit, they need $100 TODAY, and don't mind paying $20 at the end of the month for the privilege, but some are scammers, so I'd rather not wade in that water.

From what I have seen if you need like $500 those payday loan joints want a good chunk of your paycheck in fees and interest.

*** Legit HD gift card, contractor bids a job picks up materials, does the job, gives the receipt as part of the bill to the client, and returns extra items for a gift card, then uses gift cards to partially pay some employees etc.

*** I hate gift cards and won't use them. No polite way to sort out problems if the card doesn't work.
