I have one from the 1960's that measure in the 1/32", but it is too cold to go to the garage to get a picture. Remind me during the daytime.. Junk..

I usually just use my eyes looking for wear, dryrotting, cracks, gouges, etc. I have a thread gauge at work that's color coded. >5/32 is green, 4/32-5/32 band is yellow, and <4/32 is red. I forget who makes it but, the colored bands reduces my squinting to see the exact reading.

The wear bars. They are a great easy universal way to evaluate a customers tires assuming there is normal wear patterns.

I have that same one and it is made by Accutire. I also have a digital one made by Fowler ..

Something like this one from Snap-On. (http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=12341&group_ID=1669&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog)

Wear bars are OK but only for even wear like Jim said above.

I thought I saw something where they were starting to discourage the penny trick because it doesn't leave enough usable tread on the tire.

Read the DOT date code on the side, more than 3 years and tires are no longer the same speed or traction rating.

You talking for bike, or car? What brand/type tires you run on track?

That would be the car. The bike doesn't go on the track without at least 50% tread if it's street tires. Car gets eagle f1's and the bike gets michelin pilot p2 ct's
