Hey guys I am new here and recently completed my build of the mother earth waste oil heater. With all the talk about waste oil heaters I figured I would introduce myself and give some insight to my of the heater.
First I am an 18 year Navy Chief in Norfolk, Va. and do alot of car fabrication in a 790 sq. ft. metal garage.
So here is my build in pictures

Is that for Gin or Whiskey?

What a great first post. Can you describe what and how it works??? being a California type, we're not too familiar with heaters. :dunno:

Im also interested ini moreinfo on this. Did you design it yourself or find info on it? Do you have more details and specs on it? Thanks

This is the link I posted about the Mother Earth News heater, in my eariler thread on waste oil heat. While its not what I want for shop heat, It certainly is workable, expecially for a smaller shop (which at 60x60, mine is not)

Excellent job of construction!

Here (http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel_library/ethanol_motherearth/me4.html) is the instructions to build one. I would be interested in one but I'm not sure I could get an adequate supply of used oil to keep it running.

Hey guys thanks for the compliments. The intsructions I used were posted by Brian and Charles. As for the amount of oil needed it would depend on how big the space you were gonna heat was. I run through it at a fair pace if I am really trying to heat the place good (remember 25x30 ft uninsulated metal bldg) but on the same note I have come up with some ideas to make it much more efficent as well. Here are dome pics I took of the latest modification. I made ducting to blow air around the tank kinda like a blower on a wood stove. It really helps but the 230v squirrel cage I am currently using is just to powerful so I will be looking into that as well.

Well, here's another post I'll have to print out and keep around for reference. Thanks for sharing!

It just kills me to take gallons of used oil back to the parts store, then buy gas for heat. This idea of burning my used oil appeals to the Scotsman in me! A friend of mine used to heat his barn in the winter with one, and it worked very well. But he always used fuel oil, as he was afraid waste oil would smell. Does this one produce an odor when in use?

great job on the heater. I am thinking about building one for myself but I would like to burn used hydrolic oil. would this work?

hjv11 you should be able to get a 110 volt motor to fit in there from the pics can you adjust that motor to run on 110 it looks like it has extra wiring with it?grainger sells alot of different motors.just make sure the shaft diameter and the frame size is the same you might be able to get one with a couple of different speeds.

Here in Australia, we probably don't get the cold weather you do, but I have been using a natural draft waste oil heater for 11 years. I have just finished giving it it's first overhaul and upgrade, after much shaming by a bloke building a copy.

The body is two old truck brake drums, I don't think that it will ever burn out.
