I have been offered an unused eliminator socket set at reasonable money by a friend of my brothers.
Does anyone know why these were discontinued by Armstrong? Does anyone have any first hand experience of the durability of this system? Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I have the 1/2" Drive SAE / Metric set. I don't know why they were discontinued, but other manufactures making through hole socket sets at a much lower price might have something to do with it. I use it on all thread for adjusting platform heights. They are well made the only issue I have had if you bump the ratchet with the socket inserted if will fall out sometimes. The Gearwrench set holds the socket better in the ratchet, but years ago when I bought the Armstrong set Gearwrench did not make through hole sets that went beyond 3/4".

I was going to get a set a year or two ago as my on board car set because they were so cheap on fleabay, but I figured there was a reason why they were discontinued so soon.
One thing that irked me about the design was the ratchet teeth on the socket. Am I correct? Exposed to grit and wear.

Yes the teeth are exposed. I never had a problem with anything getting caught in the teeth, but I have never used the set in an dirty elbow's deep environment.
