I was at my local Sears yesterday, and they have the Craftsman powder coating gun kit marked down from $189.99 to $19.97! After calling a buddy, I got two, but the cashier only charged me for one. After I pointed out his mistake, he charged me for both. I have always kind of wanted to try one, but never enough to spend the money. Now I have to make room for an electric oven. Maybe I could use a heat lamp or a heat gun?

If you have a compressor the HF gun is alot better than that Cman gun, no offense meant, it is a crappy gun.
Sell the things on Ebay and get two of the HF guns and I'll show you some mods to them that will take them from guns you can get by with to a decent hobby gun. Heat lamp or gun is not going to work, it may melt some powder but you won't get a good cure.
Unless you have a dust control system or some other way to keep the powder contained do not use it in your garage, use it outside or you will have powder in everything. Warning, don't be suprised if you start powder coating everything that doesnt move and end up buying a $900 "pro" within the year :)
Heres a link to "craftsman powder coat" on Ebay, see what they are going for.

Someone needs to come up with a coating system that DOESN'T require an oven. Would sell like hotcakes. That is the only thing that prevents me from experimenting.

You can get a basic oven free, a household oven from the garbage will work fine, unless you don't have the room but unless I have you confused with someone you have a big garage, no?

Yea, really don't have the room for an oven. Big garage? I wouldn't call it big per se. Average compared to some of the ones on here. Besides, it's filled with too much stuff as it is.
Maybe if there was a way to shrink the size of a real oven by removing non-essentials. I dunno. Never taken one apart.

Thanks for the heads up!
Went to the one local Sears store - already sold out.
Figured that I'd drive across town for the heck of it to check the other store - online didn't even show the item, much less where it was in stock.
Looked around and then asked. Nope, didn't have any of those... Walking out, something caught my eye. One box on a bottom shelf. Walked back towards the counter and passed one of the u-scan machines on the way. Yep, on sale! Got it up to the counter and the salesman takes it (younger guy, mid to late twenties, not the one I had asked earlier). He scans it and immediately is going "F**k, f**k, f**k, f**k, f**k, f**k, f**k, sh**, f**k, f**k, sh**..." Turns to me and asks how the heck people find out about this stuff? I just look at him quizzically... "These deals. How do people find out about these deals?" "Oh - on the internet," is my response.
Basically, he says he's wanted one of these guns but wasn't going to spend $200 on it. As soon as he's finished ringing me up he checks the inventory - nope, last one.
Like LoneGunman says, I know this isn't the greatest gun. But I figure I'll play around with it and see how much use it is going to be to me. I'll upgrade if it looks like something I'll do more of.
Oh, and to complete the weekend, this is after scoring a Humboldt forced air 34" x 36" bench oven for $26. Saw it the other week on eBay and put in a snipe for $35 on a whim and pretty much forgot about it. Got the e-mail that I won earlier this week - only one other bid and the other guy had his bid in for $25. New these things go for $1600 and up. So picked that up on Friday.
Guess I get to experiment with powder coating now!

Thanks for the info, Lone Gunman. I will look for the thread in the fabrication section. I knew it was cheap, and I have plenty of compressed air, so I was leaning toward Eastwood's Hot Cote. But for $20, I couldn't pass it up. I really need to spend more time in the Fab section, anyway.
PAToyota, hilarious story. You'd think the kid could have acted a little more professional, but oh well. Maybe he will have a future in politics. You should have asked him how much he would give you for yours.

I saw one in the store a few weeks back marked down to $50 or so and couldn't justify it. For $20 I'd have bought whatever they had to resell...hmm my wife is going back there soon for portraits.

Each store has different price. One store quote $95 and another store quoted $45. The salesman told me price depend on store.

you mean he was hiding it so he could buy it for himself? Seems like he could have just put it behind the counter.

No, he wasn't hiding it. He didn't know that they were on sale.
The first salesperson I talked to was just clueless. They probably would have told me they didn't think they sold hammers either...

Just noticed one on the local craigslist - listing the $189.99 original price (and mentioning "plus tax") and offering it for $100.

Went to my local sears, was marked clearance for $94 had the clerk check the price. Their register shows $50 but none in stock. Was hoping for the $20 price. But I picked up some powder that matches my boxes, think I'll get the HF gun and make something now.

Is the powder also on sale?
I got one but the cup lock is missing, understand that they break easily. Looks like it can still be used without the lock, maybe just tape it on just to play with it?

Yes the powder is also on sale. I forgot what I paid for it, but it was cheap. Yes, the little red locks break quite easily. Usually, you don't even need them at all, but if your cup slides out easily, I would use some tape or maybe a little tapered dowel in the hole.

Thanks! I picked up the last one (display model) for $31 at the local mall. I need to buy some powder... does anyone recommend "powder buy the pound"? Is there a better place?

Mikeatrpi,
You bought a regular kitchen oven for $31, correct? Not the HF one?
I wish that HF oven had a more Harbor Freighty price tag. Still, it doesn't look half bad in the pictures.

Oh sorry, I was talking about the powder coat kit from Sears...
I'm probably going to use a toaster oven for now.
