View Full Version : Wrench size comparison thread

Been wanting to do this for a while and finally got prodded enough... :D

I measured total length, beam width and thickness in the middle of the beam, greatest width and thickness of both ends. All in mm since I'm fractionally challenged... I used 5/8in and 16mm wrenches since they are very close in size. Interestingly enough, the SAE and metric wrenches in the same series don't have exactly the same measurements. Go figure...

Here's a pic of the wrenches:

And here are the (approximate :) ) measurements:

<table border="1"> <tr> <th>Brand</th> <th>Model</th> <th>Size</th> <th>Length</th> <th>Beam Width</th> <th>Beam Thickness</th> <th>Open End Width</th> <th>Open End Thickness</th> <th>Box End Width</th> <th>Box End Thickness</th> </tr> <tr> <td>Armstrong</td> <td>52-316 6pt</td> <td>16</td> <td>242</td> <td>14.8</td> <td>5.7</td> <td>35.2</td> <td>7.4</td> <td>24.8</td> <td>10.44</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Armstrong</td> <td>Tappet</td> <td>5/8</td> <td>253</td> <td>14.6</td> <td>3.8</td> <td>33.6</td> <td>5.7</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Craftsman</td> <td>CrossForce</td> <td>5/8</td> <td>242</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td>34.8</td> <td>9.1</td> <td>32.4</td> <td>10.4</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Craftsman</td> <td>6pt raised panel</td> <td>5/8</td> <td>202</td> <td>15.3</td> <td>6.0*</td> <td>32.5</td> <td>7.6</td> <td>24.7</td> <td>8.6</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Craftsman</td> <td>Flare nut</td> <td>5/8</td> <td>180</td> <td>14.0</td> <td>5.6</td> <td>27.2</td> <td>10.9</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Craftsman</td> <td>Flare nut</td> <td>16</td> <td>180</td> <td>13.8</td> <td>5.3</td> <td>26.9</td> <td>10.5</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Craftsman</td> <td>6pt raised Panel</td> <td>16</td> <td>192</td> <td>14.9</td> <td>5.6*</td> <td>31.3</td> <td>6.9</td> <td>23.7</td> <td>8.5</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Craftsman</td> <td>12pt raised Panel -VV-44697</td> <td>5/8</td> <td>202</td> <td>15.5</td> <td>5.5*</td> <td>33.1</td> <td>7.8</td> <td>23.9</td> <td>9.4</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Craftsman</td> <td>12pt raised Panel -VV-42924</td> <td>16</td> <td>202</td> <td>15.7</td> <td>5.7*</td> <td>32.8</td> <td>7.9</td> <td>24.4</td> <td>9.8</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Craftsman</td> <td>12pt raised Panel -V^-42924</td> <td>16</td> <td>204</td> <td>15.8</td> <td>6.3*</td> <td>33.7</td> <td>8.1</td> <td>24.2</td> <td>9.3</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Craftsman Pro</td> <td>44906</td> <td>16</td> <td>236</td> <td>14.1</td> <td>5.6</td> <td>32.6</td> <td>7.35</td> <td>23.4</td> <td>10.5</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Facom</td> <td>40R.16</td> <td>16</td> <td>188</td> <td>14.13</td> <td>4.44</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td>6.96</td> <td>24.44</td> <td>9.55</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Facom</td> <td>440 (Fishbelly)</td> <td>16</td> <td>195</td> <td>14.49</td> <td>5.33</td> <td>35.56</td> <td>7.62</td> <td>24.38</td> <td>10.16</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Hazet</td> <td>600N-16</td> <td>16</td> <td>229</td> <td>13.71</td> <td>4.88</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td>7.25</td> <td>23.88</td> <td>11.35</td> </tr> <tr> <td>GearWrench</td> <td>XL Locking Flex</td> <td>5/8</td> <td>247</td> <td>17.7</td> <td>5.1</td> <td>33.6</td> <td>8.3</td> <td>30.1</td> <td>10.0</td> </tr> <tr> <td>GearWrench</td> <td>Reversible</td> <td>5/8</td> <td>210</td> <td>14.7</td> <td>4.8</td> <td>35.6</td> <td>8.1</td> <td>32.6</td> <td>10.4</td> </tr> <tr> <td>GearWrench</td> <td>Stubby</td> <td>5/8</td> <td>125</td> <td>14.2</td> <td>4.3</td> <td>33.9</td> <td>6.8</td> <td>30.6</td> <td>9.9</td> </tr> <tr> <td>GearWrench</td> <td>XL Locking Flex</td> <td>16</td> <td>244</td> <td>15.6</td> <td>4.9</td> <td>32.5</td> <td>7.7</td> <td>30.1</td> <td>9.9</td> </tr> <tr> <td>MAC</td> <td>Extra Long KS2</td> <td>5/8</td> <td>280</td> <td>12.1</td> <td>5.6</td> <td>34.2</td> <td>9.5</td> <td>23.9</td> <td>10.2</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Snap on</td> <td>4-way angle</td> <td>5/8</td> <td>178</td> <td>12.2</td> <td>4.4</td> <td>33.4</td> <td>6.1</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> <td>&nbsp;</td> </tr> <tr> <td>Snap on</td> <td>SOEXM</td> <td>16</td> <td>244</td> <td>14.5</td> <td>4.9</td> <td>32.2</td> <td>7.2</td> <td>23.6</td> <td>10.3</td> </tr> </table> * Thickness w/o "raised panel"

Now, go forth and measure yours, post up the numbers and I'll update the table

Thanks a bunch. Would you be able to speak a bit on your measurement method (especially length), so a standardized method can be used by everyone who wants to contribute?

You're welcome.

For length, I used the longest one, i.e. from the middle of the box to the tip of the open end further away. I guess to be truly accurate, one would have to measure parallel to the beam but I don't think +/- 1mm really matters for the length...

The other measurements were done with a caliper.

Thanks guys!

Updated the table.

We'll reach critical mass at some point of time. I have some Toptul stuff on order... :D

Not really. The thing is that I think a comparison table would be really useful. Say I'm looking for a set of really thin wrenches, or something in a specific length, or a thick box end, etc... A table like this makes it super easy to compare. Can also be handy to justify new purchases... (but honey, don't you see, if I just had a wrench that was a bit smaller than this one, but not TOO short... :D)

Actually, I'll also add a list of the longest, shortest, etc. tomorrow or the day after.
