Found this little tester on e-bay and paid WAY too much for it, but what the heck:lol_hitti.

However, this model represents one of the "Holy Grails" in Sun testers. There weren't that many sold and if you can find one, the small CRT is usually crapped out, or the accessories are lost. You just can't find this unit as a complete set very often.

When it arrived, the OHM/MF wasn't working so I dissassembled it and quickly found out that someone had tried to fix the DV meter before and totally bent the movement. I had to unsolder the scale and realign the movement.

Talk about a pain. My hands aren't that steady anymore and maneuvering a soldering iron around in such a small space and on such small gauge wire is a lesson in frustration. Anyway, with that problem solved, and after a good cleanup and a few new leads, this one's a "keeper".

Enjoy!!

All "buttoned up" and ready to go --

All the accessories were tested and work as well -- :bounce:

Bump!! I've looked at the usual Internet vendors for an OEM manual. Yesterday I also called a few dealers that trade in older industrial manuals. No one has anything remotely associated with this small tester. Anyone have a clue where to get a manual (a copy even) for this old tester? Snap-on didn't even know that Sun had made this model.

Thanks --

I cannot help, but that thing is really cool. I would not have a clue how to use that thing without some instructions. I really like that green screen thingy though!

(Well, not entirely true, I do understand the OHM side, but I know nothing about that cool green screen)

Roughly when would that thing have been made? Any idea?

Early to -mid 1960's was their peak production Buck, but I believe they sold these things way into the 1970's.

What does the green screen tell the user? :headscrat

It shows how well the field collapses inside the coil primary in order to initiate the spark, and how well the condenser regulates the speed at which the field collapses in order to get more energy into the secondary. If the field collapsed too quickly (bad condenser) you'd get arcing and eventually pitted points.

That is the part I would not know how to interpret. I understand what you explained, it is just that I would not be able to make a visual interpretation of what things should look right or wrong on that little screen.

The tester measures in KV and comes with a coil lead. It's basically providing an inline connection for the coil and distributor cap. You could bench test, or test on the vehicle. The CRT shows the output of the coil at field collapse. It has a switch for selecting between traditional and high output coils.

Sun published specific year/make/model coil specs in their tune up charts and guides so that the tech could compare readings to a baseline of "good/bad" readings.

The problem is that many of the procedures require a very precise step-by-step diagnosis and setup. That's why the manual is so critical.

Thanks Billy -- I called them and they were very nice. They even called back within a few hours, but their records and libraries don't go back far enough for this equipment.

In fact it was pretty amusing when they told me that they didn't even remember having this model in their inventory.

Guess it wasn't a big seller :lol_hitti
