I couldn't resist. It was calling my name. I was already feeling pretty lonely with most of the Reed family gone.
Wilton 9400 found it's way to my place today.

Here's one I picked up recently. Anyone who knows any info on it, it would be appreciated. Long story short, I ended up getting it just for the asking! :bounce:

After a vice has been beaten on for 50 years, and still works, you think you need two as a backup?

You would be amazed at how they can be broken. I have broken two of them myself! (I am ashamed to admit it)

It is pretty easy for bicycle mechanic to kill a vise we use them hard a lot harder then they were ever intended.

One of these days I'll trade in my Craftsman $60 one for a nice Wilton... but spending $500+ on a vice... ouch!

How so? Are you straightening frames? I just can't imagine what load you would put on a vice that a truck or equipment mechanic wouldn't. I'm not trying to be smart, just curious:thumbup:

Feels like it too. I was staying with a friend and his parents at a rented condo in Florida. In the garage, of course I noticed the vise, and...knowing that the condo owner had just went into assisted living, asked someone who talked to him if he'd be interested in selling the vise. Later on that day, I was told I could have it if I wanted it. :bounce:
btw, it's been repainted a nice hunter green

Damn -- where do you find these things? I've checked C-List and the local papers and get "zilch". It's always good to have a nice backup vise (or two) around the shop.

Removing free wheels , bending a frame would be light weigh work in comparison.
Think of the torque applied to a one inch bolt with a 4 foot fixed wrench on it bolt lever one piece , repeated several times a day for weeks on end until the vise dies.
Some times a vise is used as a crushing device to remove a freewheel body , bodies are of hardened steel this is the number one killer of vices.
It is rare now but it use to be prevalent

Do you know anything about a Chicago Morgan 40 vise? I have had it for 25 years, recently restored it, it had at least 3 coats of paint on it, Bright Yellow, then under that, Bright Blue, then what looked like the original Dark Blue. I took it all the way down and primed it, then painted it Chevy Orange. I only wish that it had the swivle base...otherwise it is a great work horse of a vise. I love old Tools!

.Odd
.
Vises...We all have them on an end of a bench in the garage/shop. And then every auto shop that I have worked in has had one on every techs bench and was used often. Last year I changed manufactures to a new state of the art repair facility, and ......it has only one averaged sized vise for 38 bays, 33 techs... Sure do miss not having my own vise right at your work area......Other things missing due to zoning laws...NO mig welder, torch gas welder set-up or even a bench grinder/wire wheel (none, zip). ( vises & BMW power)
