I finally got some spare time, and cleaned up the garage. This vise was looking very bad, no paint and very rusty. Ran the scotch brite over it and it cleaned up quickly. Ran to Lowes and picked up some Rustoleum paint. The safety red looks looks good, but the silver(stainless steel) looks odd, especially on the jaws. Any ideas on a silver/gray that might look better?
I also did a search, but can't really find anything that would give any clues to its age.

The pics don't show it, but my guess is the OP feels that it looks like a chain-link fence painted silver.

I'd say, just use the damn thing, beat it up a little, it will look just fine.

Yeah, with the grass painted silver with over spray.
My wife said I did it on purpose, Ohio State Buckeyes, I didn't though.

I paint all my restored or shop-made equipment with that color Rust-oleum. I love it. It's very durable, stays clean, and looks great.
For any surface that is a contact surface, I use the Rust-oleum "high performance" or "hard hat" flat black. Handles, table surfaces, parts that slide across one another, press plates, etc. etc. Part of it is looks, part is shear durability. You can beat on it, clamp with it, scrape metal across it, and it stays put. I've got a vise table I built about 8 years ago and painted flat black, and it's been beat on and had a lot of metal set, dropped and scraped across it, and it still looks perfect.
I painted my grandfather's vise table with it almost 25 years ago, and it's still in perfect shape in my father's garage in Ohio.
The bright red with flat black "accents" looks great. Unfortunately, my son has pointed out that red and black are Georgia Bulldog colors, and he prefers Florida Gators.

Looks very nice. You did a great job on it. But if it were in my shop it wouldn't look that nice for too long. :)
