It is with heavy heart that I bring before you this eve my brethren a totally different and foreign message to come from me for many years. Just follow along as I share this unforseen development.

Today I called the local Snap-on man. I do not know him and have never had any dealings with him. I got the standard business message saying he will get back to me. I was quite surprised when I got a return call in less than 30 minutes. I told him I had two Par X ratchets that needed help, one needs the reversing lever, the other a gut kit.

Mr. Snappy asks if Friday would be soon enough for help, (I say yes) we then discuss where he commonly stops and we agree that I will leave said ratchets with the business owner at one of his stops since I know the business owner. The guy is 100 % cordial and nice and says ring him up anytime and he will be glad to take care of me! ???

This is not what I have experienced through the years, none of my old rules for Snap-on applied to this instance, great attitude and service, and I did not spend a plug nickel with him! I do not know if that will ever happen again, but I figured for as much as I have been bitching about Snap-on service for years it would only be fair for me to report back that perhaps there are some of those guys that will back their products regardless of the guy turning the wrench. I will try to remember to report back on how Friday works out for me. :wtf:

Um, yea, but you have not gotten your ratchets fixed quite yet. He still has to follow through. Hope he doesn't toss them in the hopper and give you cheesy Blue Points as replacements.

I kid of course...

Oh lord don't even suggest that! Just the thought makes my stomach turn! You just gave me an idea, thank you. I will attach a note saying if he cannot help with repairs simply leave them as is.

Maybe with the way the economy is going, people are realizing they need to do things that separate them from the other dealers, service with a smile that is at least half good could make or break you right now.

All right, new F80's for everyone! (jeez, I am such a hick I have no clue what an F80 would look like if it dropped from a tree and hit my ol noodle!)

Anyway, who knows, if he treats me good I might just grace him with my presence by sashayin down the aisle of his truck and puttin the ol eyeball on his nice and shinys!

Not to worry though, I am still a bit scared anytime I see anything that looks remotely like a grab bar for assuming the position! All it would take is seeing that and a jar of super duper slick assembly lube and I would be like FEET, DO YOUR DUTY! and be gone in an instant! All that would be seen of ol Bunckle Uck would be the back of my big heiney makin tracks!

UB, be careful, good service may cause you to drop your guard and your wallet to open.

Seriously though, I'm cheap but good service always gets me to spend more money, and with a smile!!

....Good luck with your service on Fri, U.B. I finally got a call from the Snap-on guy that I deal with. I emailed him since I didn't get a return phone call. I was getting pissed because I wanted some stuff. He called me and said that he had been busy , but never too busy to talk to a customer.:) I met up with him and bought an impact adapter & got a screwdriver warranted. For the heck of it I was talking to him about a top box. I was surprised that he knocked a couple hundred off the price.( not that I'm getting one ) I think these dealers are getting a little more flexible with the way the economy is.

BTW ..I was reading the warranty info in the front of last yrs catalog.
Technically speaking , I think you need a lawyer to figure it out.

I hope everything works outs for you UB. I guess I’m one of a few people on GJ that is blessed with a good SO dealer. If everything works out for you hopefully you will have a good SO dealer you can rely on also.

Well I am back to report on my service call. First, I just left the ratchets at a shop on his route where I know the shop owner so I was not there when the guy stopped and fixed them. The guy gut kitted both of them. The 1/4" feels alright, but a little coarse. The 1/2" feels horrible. I do not know how it will be with a socket attached, but without one it is quite difficult to to turn the drive end. I am sure it will be fine though, I have never found one I could not get lubed and loosened up good so I am sure I will be able to make it better. I really do not feel like I have any room to complain though, he fixed them both as requested so now all I have to do is tweak his fix.

So are they snap on guts or something else?

I assume they are Snap-on guts. Do they have an alternative to Snap-on gut kits?

It was interesting, instead of leaving a note with the ratchets I called the guy back yesterday and told him if he could not repair the ratchets I did not want Blue Point import ratchets as replacements so just leave them as he found them. He was very cool, said he totally understood.

As I said earlier they are a bit tight, but I am sure after I monkey with them a bit they will be just fine.

When you get a gut kit, what does it come with? I'm trying to figure out why it would be tight. I would think on an old ratchet, a gut kit would produce a loose ratchet due to wear...unless of course things aren't meshing as they should.

The gear, pawl, spring/ball, lever (and lever rivet or screw as req'd), cap and cap ring if fitted, plate screws, instructions and small tube of Superlube. Everything but the body and bottom plate.

Actually I just got a rebuild kit that has binding in two spots when the gear is rotated. Dealer is ordering a new kit.

It's always a good idea to try the gear in the body before installing the pawl and again before installing the rivet in the pawl for that reason.

Something I've always wondered about and never got around to trying is to lap the new gears. Pack the guts with Clover compound and then work the ratchet both ways until it loosed up and then clean it out and oil it up.

I took the 1/2" apart today. To make it smooth which it now is I had to drive the reversing lever back out and shorten the length of the spring to reduce the pressure it exerted on the reversing lever. I also used a mixture af engine assembly lube and a bit of gease and packed a bit of that into the heads of both the ratchets. Both feel just fine now, much smoother.
