does anyone know where or if I can get replacement gears/pawls for my older ratchets 1/2 and 3/8 drive.... craftsman guy said they could only replace my ratchet with new one.... do not want one of the new POS they offer.... mine are the good old -v- series for reference

Some of the kits are not made anymore! That being said; check out this thread to figure out which one may or may not be available for your particular Craftsman ratchet:

thanks for the information billymade.... i was aware that they are "obsolete", but was hoping someone might know of a place selling old stock or something to that effect... i have found a few on ebay, but have had to do a bunch of my own research to cross kit numbers with ratchet numbers... actually kind of funny the amount of them on ebay for current ratchets that you can get for free via sears...lol

Don't expect freebees for V series at your local Sears store unless a PTM has some extras and is willing to part with them just for you. Ebay is the best place to find obsolete Cman V kits, but it will cost you. You have to decide, how much is restoring a good vintage ratchet worth to you?

not expecting freebies, just willing to pay to keep mine in good working condition... as opposed to getting the new ones with plastic reversing levers...

i took a old ratchet to the sears by my house . they tried to give me a new one. i told them that i wanted a rebuild kit, the guy took the ratche into the back of the store .had someone rebuild it . then told me that it was the last kit they had and if it broke again that i could try different stores to see if they had another kit.

If you have the V series, the levers won't be interchangable with the current plastic ones. It's a totally different setup. the old V series ended in 1993 or 1994.

Thank you - you made my point.

I am very well aware of the differences between the new ones and my old v series ones....
to clarify.... sears store would only offer to replace ratchet with a new one off the shelf.... I do not like the new style ones.... have had a couple and nothing but problems with the new cheap reveresing levers.... so, i am willing to pay, exchange or whatever it takes to keep my old ratchets in excellent working order..... I know there are still a few rebuild kits out there... have seen a couple on ebay.... just thought someone on GJ would either know of a place that would cary the older obsolete items(for sale) or that another member might just happen to have a kit setting in the top of their tool box not being needed.... I would rather keep my busines through fellow GJ members rather than ebay or other source
thanks

how bad is the pawl?
do you have a picture?
perhaps you could save the pawl by welding and regrinding the teeth or how hard would it be to make a mew pawl

the pawl itself is ok, small dinged spot, but saveable, the problem is on the drive gears... about 1/3 are gone or damaged... if I had a steel lathe/mill, i could retro fit the modern kit into it.... only difference on the drive is the new ones have extra metal surrounding the quick release not letting it go into the ratchet housing to full depth.... diamater and tooth counths are the same which would let me re use the old pawl...still a lot of work to save an old ratchet.... I find it very interesting how the basic mechanics of these ratchets is still current today... yet they have changed other cosmetics to make them far less desirable...

Go over to the Craftsman club website, there is a Craftsman ratchet guru that is like the old ratchet wisperer for Crafty ratchets or something like that over there. That is what I would do if it were mine. Good luck!
I think he is the mod or something like that.
