I have the Industrial version of Rustoleum's Epoxy Shield. I decided to stay with epoxy and not tiles because I get alot of motorcycle traffic in my garage with kickstands. What does everyone else prefer for their flooring?

I've had good success with www.ucoatit.com products. I started to bust up the concrete in my garage to replace the concrete and the concrete is busting but the ucoatit is actually staying on the concrete as it breaks. I am thinking about using some race deck in the office/storage part of the garage , but I'm not sure yet.

i'm in the process of trying to find a good vendor that would cut a deal to all the members here on some racedeck, so if you have any ideas let me know and i'll see what i can do.

I would see about getting racedeck to sponsor the site , I'm sure they would love the exposure. Let them get in on the ground floor , inexchange they give members a discount.

i was thinking about that, but they just sell through vendors don't they? either way if they would cut us a deal directly through them it would be a huge price cut compared to buying it from a vendor. i'll see if i can't get ahold of someone at racedeck on monday.

I've love to get some of that race deck. I think I'd have to buy about a piece at a time to afford it though. Maybe by the time I'm 40 I'll have enough to cover the garage:)
I am on the fence on my flooring.
I got a quote of $3.38 each delivered for 400+ tiles (not too bad, but not cheap).
On the cheaper side of the spectrum, Sams club has 10 x 22 BLT mats for about 178 each. This is much cheaper than other retailers I have found. About $400 delivered.
If I could get a better price on race decks, I would certainly be in for about 460 tiles.

I used Rustoleum's epoxy on my garage, in the future I may use race deck to make some "parking pads" for the bikes and cars. That way I'm not spending a bunch to cover the whole floor. Should look decent too.

I plan on using UCoatit when I get mine done. I need to be able to wash cars and clean up the salt and sand in the winter Plus, I plan on doing woodworking in there, so sweeping the sawdust wil be easier with a coated floor.

 I installed the BLT coin pattern in my garage last summer. It looks great but there are two issues with it; 1. it will expand and contract with changes in temperature and 2. the tires stain the vinyl. When installed it was perfect in the summer. Now that winter is here it has shrunk by as much as 2 to 3" on the side of the garage that has nothing on it (shelves, storage cabinets, tool chests etc). Once the warmer weather arrives, I will re-lay that side. Other than that it looks great.
PS I am in Northern California and am not a victim of below freezing temperatures. I can only imagine the contraction in frigid climates.

Hey everyone, I just moved over from RR.net and I have to say that the timing of the site is just about perfect for me. I've been thinking about doing some remodeling in my garage and have been looking into flooring, cabinets, etc.
I've got a three car garage(car in the small section, two bikes in the larger section  ) and am thinikng about putting up a wall between the two sections to create more of a "room" feel for the bike section. Hang some cabinets on the wall for more storage of course, and get some flooring.
I've looked at the Race Deck(nice but pricey) and the "Motormat" stuff which is a bit less expensive. I didn't see any mention of Motormat here yet....has anyone seen it or had any experience. I'd like to get some samples from them, and was leaning more in their direction than that of Racedeck basically due to cost.
Check them out at www.motormat.com and see what you think?
Group buy on Race deck would be great too.
Thanks LD for the site.....should be very helpful and cool :rocker:

A lot of you already know what I did with my garage floor. I went with Industrial Vinyl Tile.
It's the same stuff that they use in major office buildings, shopping malls, etc...
It's very tough. To prevent kickstand damage like Lucky mentioned, I just use a small disc, the same kind you would use in fresh asphalt. To this date, I have no kickstand damage on any tile. BUT, in the event of damage, it's a snap to heat and remove an old tile and replace it with a brand new one.

Wandered in here from the Garage Forum at Autopia...great idea this site!
I've used Tarket Azrock tile on my floor. Textured...ADA approved non-slip surface.
So far...very happy. Bought the tiles at a surplus outlet for 22 cents/ft.
I've also uploaded a photo of what a tiled floor looks like when coated with a nice layer of snow / mag chloride run-off crud....all of which cleans up pretty well...but clean-up you must :)

Hey Peter!
Like Peter, I came here from a car detailing site (detailcity.com, from a thread that referenced this site from autopia.org). I am in the process of renovating my garage. I've got some pics on Yahoo!, and when the project is complete, I'll post them here. I followed Peter's lead and used the Azrock.

I'm experimenting with 2'x2' charcoal gray square tiles of interlocking Anti Fatigue mats (1/2" thick) purchased at Costco. Garage is 20'x20' and I installed a 16'x16' square of the stuff dead center in the garage with a 2' border all around. Total cost, around $135.00. It provides insulation and cushioning when sitting, standing or kneeling on the floor. I don't perform mechanical work in the garage, just detailing. If it doesn't work out I will use them in my basement workshop.

The mats from Costco worked okay for my side of the garage...
But my wife had a tendency of turning the front wheels upon entering the garage - to maximize the space between the vehicles.
That caused the mats to wear out quite rapidly.
I will probably go with the U-coat-it or Muscle Gloss in my new garage due to the climate as well...

I've heard mixed things about racedeck.
I like the looks, but others who've had it have some issues.
I'll see if I can dig up some of the points raised.. (It was a while ago, but it was enough to make me rethink using it.)
The downsides to the items like those palstic tiles are that water, snow, or whatever will be hard to get up, spills will be hard to clean up, and when you drop bolts and screws and stuff they will be hard. Not hard but you will have to remove tiles and stuff. Not to mention if you have a creeper or rolling stool it will be a pain to roll on.

Definate interest in RackDeck tiles if we can get a group discount. I'm probably going to be doing a 22'X18' section or so.
If we can get the price down below your competitors.......then my guess would be that you'd get lots of business from this board

1. Any prep work on the conrete itself (it needs to be flat, level, and free from defects).
2. Thorough cleaning and drying of the concrete.
3. Find the exact center of your garage and mark it.
4. Start trowling out the adhesive from the center.
5. Allow adhesive about 20 - 30 minutes to set up.
6. Lay tile in desired pattern.
7. Roll with a 150 lb roller to ensure good contact.
8. Wait 4 hours before heavy foot traffic and 24 - 36 hours before vehicle traffic.
Took me about 3 days to do my 900 sq. ft. garage.

ZRWON,,
I started researching the product you suggested.. A definite possibility..
Sam's Club handles one style of their product..
Looks like a nice easy install with the coin pattern.
Probably cost me around $1,100. for 660 sq. ft. 22'X10' rolls
and considerably less with the grooved style...
I'm working with a heated garage so cold temps would not be a consideration...

:rocker: I posted early on when this forum first started about this product. I have it in my garage, the green coin pattern. It will expand and contract with temp changes but that is not a big deal especially if you have a heated garage. I live in Sacramento, CA where the lowest temp we have seen this winter was in the high 30's and there was contraction. In the summer we get into the 100's fairly regularly and there is expansion. One thing that has disappointed me is that the tires will stain the vinyl and I have not found anything that will remove it. Again not a big deal unless you are as anal as I am. I have used a floor jack on it without any problems as well as jack stands. Overall I do like it; easy to clean, spills such as gas or oil wipe right off , simple to install and best of all it does look great.

Lou K,
Would you have chosen a different color?
Possibly Blk due to the tire scuffs?
lkirchner
02-07-2005, 12:08 PM
:D The reason I did not go with the black is that it shows every mark: footprints, tire tracks, dust, water spots, etc. Not any different than a black car. In addition the stain that is left by the tires is not totally black but a brownish black that would probably be noticeable even on black. As I said I am overly picky and when the cars are in the garage you cannot see the marks.

 I also considered the lined material but there were 2 things that kept me away from it. The first was that the weight and thickness were much lighter than the coin pattern. I was concerned that it might shift much more than the coin pattern. The second was the ease of sweeping it clean. I had, in a previous home, a pad in front of my work bench that was lined or ribbed and it was a bear to sweep; you had to sweep with the lines. Going accross the lines only made the stuff you were tring to clean fly into the air and land back down into the surface. With the coin you can go in any direction without a problem.

Lou K,
Those were the same concerns that I had. Also, the water drainage was a consideration. I figured the line would hold the water if the fabric was run the length of the garage. The coin pattern seems non-directional.

For what it's worth I used U Coat It on my garage floor. I followed the instructions to the letter. The coating almost immediately lifted at the tires, one of the problems they say won't happen with their product. When I approached them they said they'd send a patch kit. I said that was not acceptable, if it lifted once a patch will lift too. I called them on their satisfaction guarantee and they said they could only send a patch kit. They did offer to sell me enough to redo the whole garage at half price. I'm dealing with it by using cheap door mats for the tires. The coating has been on for 3 years and last week I pulled the wife's car in the garage not parking on a mat because I was squeezing her car in and where the tires hit the U Coat It it lifted. I'm done with U Coat It, why would I want more crap that will just lift at the tires? I also wasn't happy with the coverage, they say 2 coats will be suffient. IMHO a third would have provided the finish I was looking for. I'd like to find a coating that could go over the U Coat that would be a quality product with no lifting. Any suggestions???
Luckydevil
02-08-2005, 11:59 PM
RexRuby- my best advice would be to pull it up. Whatever you put on top will not seal to the floor unless the Ucoat-it is gone. I highly recommend the Rustoleum Industrial floor epoxy. Zero lifting, even after parking cars on it in the hot ass summer.
You will have to etch the floor with acid for prep, but this stuff is heavy duty and will not lift if installed correctly.
If you would, please make a post in the Product Reviews section so other people know about this.

I second the Rustoleum epoxy idea. I coated my garage last summer and see no signs of lifting. I regularly park my Suburban on it which weighs 7000 pounds. I did go through a tedious cleaning process of degreasing, scrubbing, rinsing, power-washing with a 2500 psi washer, acid etching, scrubbing, more scrubbing and rinsing with plenty water. I let it dry for about a week before coating, then used two coats. Rustoleum customer service said it could be re-coated within 24 hours without scuffing the surface. I live in AZ where there is not much of a chance of water seeping up and causing hydrostatic lift. I've been working on it and parking on it since August with no signs of lift. I am able to scratch the surface by dragging heavy objects across it. It's very slippery when covered with saw dust. I also went as far as filling the control joints with a latex concrete crack filler. That makes rolling creepers and workbenches across the joints almost un-noticeable. I used 4 single kits on a 20X24 garage and got a nice heavy coat.
Edit for spelling...
