FWIW, I stop in a couple of pawn/used tool shops just to keep abreast of the used retail market. Their norm here is 50% of retail. Hardly ever do I find anything to buy, but it is helpful in recognizing a bargain somewhere else.

The bargains come when I hit the yard sales/garage sales most Fridays and the larger auctions when they're close by. Recently, a friend was drooling over my tools and asked how I afforded all the S-O. When I told them they all came from yard sales and auctions, hardly ever anything new, he got excited. The following Monday, he came by all PO'd and complaining. "I went to six yard sales this weekend and didn't find a single S-O tool." I told him, Didn't I mention what you see here is forty years of hunting down the deals and trading up every time I find something better?"

Also, check craigslist.com at least three times a day, have cash in the pocket and mapquest on the bookmark. In the last two weeks, I have just missed steal deals on a $40 S-O vise and a $50 Proto top-and-bottom. I saw the ads within fifteen minutes of their appearance and was too late. Of course, I've been the first guy there more than once. (Here's a tip. Even if the c-lister says someone is coming to get it, if it's not too far away, say, "I'll come over with cash. Sometimes those guys who say they're coming don't show." Often enough, if you get there first, the seller, watching money stand in front of him, will decide since the first guy didn't make it when he said he would, decide to take your offer and deal with the other guy if he ever comes.

thnx, jack vines
